Leaked photos of #Elektron #Tonverk look great. No idea what it is but I like the boxy #design more than the analog mk2. Based on its appearance, I'd say it's a development of their #FM #synth platform like Digitone. Including separate set of outputs, two USB-C ports (one probably as a host for connecting external keyboards) and finally (first in Elektron history) an SD card reader. This feels like a long waited update to Elektron instrument design that sadly has lagged behind the competition.
I remember when #Digitone got released, I could not get used to the #design of these half-size #buttons. After working with large comfy buttons on Digitakt, It felt like such an unnecessary compromise. Finally when I decided to give it a fair try I discovered that these half-size buttons are totally fine and I can understand why #Elektron used these buttons on that instrument. It started to make sense and I started to appreciate the entire design concept of Digitone the way I did with #Digitakt.
#Digitone is such a weird instrument even in #Elektron standards. It is #FM synth and can do all the bells, cheesy pianos and jerry basses. However, it's not DX7 and uses a different approach to FM synthesis, maybe something one would expect from Casio, focusing more on different wave forms and their combinations. It shares some similarities with rudimentary #wavetable synthesis like you would find in old game consoles. This approach could be easily developed further in this new instrument.
Of course that is just a speculation from my part and I have no knowledge of what the #Tonverk is or will be. However, I'm impressed by the external #design. #Elektron seems to be moving to a new interesting direction with Tonverk and will be providing something they haven't been able to since the lunch of Digitakt / Digitone 8 years ago. I feel there are many people still believing in Elektron and still waiting for something great from that company.
