I'm honestly a little disturbed that someone just tried to argue with me that the DOJ shouldn't be bothering with Alabama, since they turn red every election.

1. That's not the point of the DOJ - they're there to protect the interests of all Americans, not the Americans who vote blue.

2. States like Alabama routinely turn red because of voter suppression.

3. Ditching Alabama is directly harming all of the vulnerable people in the state. Like, come on.

@Celeste_pewter 3rd or 4th largest African American population in the nation.
@Celeste_pewter Voter suppression is wrong no matter who it suppresses.
@Celeste_pewter That kind of thinking also privileged presidential races above everything else. Will Alabama go for Harris if all voting restrictions are removed? No. But there are any number of down ballot races where those restrictions make the difference.
@Celeste_pewter Also, enforce the laws while you have them because a few corrupt judges can just remove them from the law books.

There are several blue areas in the state. The best known is a two county swath across the state from Montgomery southward called the Black Belt. Originally because of the rich dark soil instead of red clay, but now because of the population.
