Amjad #Iraqi explains why Palestinians identify with Khader #Adnan, a prisoner who died on hunger strike, for his struggle against #israel #prisons.

"Those trying to undermine public anger over the hunger striker's death don't want to talk about the violent carceral regime that he struggled against."

Why we Palestinians see ourselves in Khader Adnan

Adnan's love for his family and stubborn struggle against Israel's oppressive military apparatus made him a national symbol across social divides.

"We know that, even prior to the war, out of 1,400 complaints of torture filed to the Ministry of Justice, zero cases have resulted in indictments."

The Brutal Conditions Facing Palestinian Prisoners

Isaac Chotiner speaks with Tal Steiner, the executive director of Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, about Israel’s detention of Palestinians.

The New Yorker

1. Most of the 9,000 Palestinians in civil #prisons were deported to 'israel' where families are forbidden to visit.

"We’ve documented nineteen different incidents of torture and abuse […], all of which have led us to believe that we’re looking at a policy rather than just isolated incidents."

"The type of abuse, how random it is, how brutal it is—we see that as giving rise to a more vengeful sentiment allowing prison guards to lash out at prisoners more brutally and randomly than before."

2. Incommunicado detention

"In normal times, a person who is targeted by the Israeli Security Agency, is arrested by the military, then taken into interrogation in a specific location operated by the I.S.A.
[…]
"But those are the cases that we would learn about only months from now because all of them are still denied counsel. The I.S.A. does not allow visitors, and we’re unable to reach them."

3. Military detention camps

"As far as we know, nobody from the outside world has entry into these detention centers.
[…]
"A detainee can be held for up to a hundred and eighty days without counsel. That’s six months that a person can be held without having the right to visitation by a lawyer."

Scabies is an itchy skin rash caused by a tiny burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. Intense itching occurs in the area where the mite burrows. The need to scratch may be stronger at night.

Scabies is contagious and can spread quickly through close person-to-person contact in a family, child care group, school class, nursing home or prison.

Prison authorities help scabies to spread by restricting inmates’ water supply and depriving them of clean clothes and medical care.

In August 2024, NGO B'tselem published a report on what it calls 'torture camps':
“B’Tselem collected testimonies from 55 Palestinians held during that time and released, almost all with no charges. Their testimonies reveal the outcomes of the rushed transformation of more than a dozen Israeli prison facilities, military and civilian, into a network of camps dedicated to the abuse of inmates as a matter of policy. Facilities in which every inmate is deliberately subjected to harsh, relentless pain and suffering operate as de-facto torture camps.
