Here's a though for a saturday morning: since there are plans to demolish the 1980s St Enoch Centre (left of shot), rather than replacing it with a bland, generic highrise structure, why not replace it with a new building which compliments the older traditional architecture of St Enoch Square (right) and turn this area back into the rather stunning civic space it once was?

More radical still, why not recreate the facade of the former St Enoch Station and Hotel, one of Glasgow's greatest lost buildings, with a new modern building behind it, with apartments above and retail space on the ground floor?

This would provide a stunning backdrop for St Enoch Square and this section of Argyle Street, and could be used as a stepping stone for the regeneration of the wider Argyle Street area, and indeed for much of the city centre.

Reconstructing a great lost building would not only raise the city's profile, but could be used as a template for regenerating other areas decimated by the well-intended, but poorly thought through planning decisions of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Yes, it might be costly, but if done well, it could be a real catalyst for creating a Glasgow for the future which respects its built heritage while still looking forward and embracing change.

Thoughts anyone?

@thisismyglasgow I always appreciate it when a building, though clearly new, has drawn inspiration from the older buildings of the place. Part re-creation. Part a new take on the shapes and themes that make a place unique. Part introducing new ideas.
@thisismyglasgow Demolished? Really? That's a massive undertaking that will cause absolute bedlam in the city centre. But, yes, something which pays homage to the past while accommodating future needs and technological advances would be ideal.

@thisismyglasgow Yes, and we could also bring back the st-enoch train station as an underground hub connecting Central and the subway!

We could even reuse the old rail line from st-enoch train station to connect trongate to the rail network. Only parking lots on the way of that

@thisismyglasgow That side of the square certainly should have something of quality, something special, not just any shopping centre frontage. You’d like to think that the between them the city council and the developers could come up with something worthy of the west side of square and the city centre.
