On the subject of #Mimics in #Pathfinder1e

Here is a snippet from the bestiary regarding their ability to mimic objects.

Mimic Object (Ex)

A mimic can assume the general shape of any Medium object, such as a massive chest, a stout bed, or a door. The creature cannot substantially alter its size, though. A mimic’s body is hard and has a rough texture, no matter what appearance it might present. A mimic gains a +20 Racial Bonus on Disguise checks when imitating an object in this manner. Disguise is always a class skill for a mimic.

Environment any
Organization solitary

Heck it even suggests a Door there! And here I thought it was being a little bit original...

With this said, any GM/DMs out there, let's come up with some fun and effective Mimics with these limitations in mind.

My personal favourite is a privie, an old style toilet, but a Mimic, literally catching adventurers with their pants down.

@NinjaDebugger

I had this idea in mind for my last campaign.

An old farmhouse that has been abandoned, people are asked to investigate and there is a lone outhouse on the hill near the fields where people would have worked.

I would say though this Mimic pushes into the large size category, but definitely. Great idea.

@ishambard over the years there have been, in dungeon & dragon mags, various mimics, including outhouses, houses, and even small castles. Pretty sure there was even a mimic family pretending to be a whole goddamn farmstead.

I really do not like mimics, and all the other trap monsters, as a thing, for the most part. They reek of adversarial nonsense and warp play in bad ways.

@NinjaDebugger

I can appreciate that viewpoint.

I agree that they are just designed to frustrate the players and foster a Players vs GM mentality. That isn't conducive to good role play or story telling.

They can easily be overdeployed or overused. Bestiaries have plethora of fascinating and fun creatures that I would definitely use before I use a mimic.

But I do love to come up with ideas for how I would use them!

@ishambard a narrow bridge across a 6-foot chasm (roughly the size of a door)

@kevincasarez

Little mimic bridge sounds fun, especially if it is totally unnecessary for the party to use. But they will use it because it is there.

On an unrelated note:

I recall giving the party a choice between a reasonably looking wooden bridge, obvious wear and tear, but nothing too terrible. And what some Kappa called a more stable stone bridge.

The wooden bridge, according to them, was not structurally sufficient, but the stone bridge was safe.

The stone bridge was a series of stepping stones that required several jumps to get between.

The kappa just wanted to see people fall in the river so they could laugh at them.
