PSA: LinkedIn are training AI models and selling data for training AI models from your posts, and the setting is enabled by default. I suggest you disable it unless Microsoft pay you.
As an update to this, the media are uncovering that LinkedIn began training AI models on user posts both without
telling customers and without updating their terms of service (they still haven’t). https://www.404media.co/linkedin-is-training-ai-on-user-data-before-updating-its-terms-of-service/
LinkedIn Is Training AI on User Data Before Updating Its Terms of Service

Multiple LinkedIn users on Wednesday noticed a setting that showed LinkedIn was using user data to improve its generative AI. LinkedIn told 404 Media it will update its terms of service “shortly.”

Why the Data Ocean Is Being Sectioned Off

Bigger is better approaches in AI create an inexhaustible appetite for users’ data, leading to a rise in user data expropriation, sectioning off of the internet, and “data feudalism.”

@GossiTheDog Huh, I can't see this option in the settings?

@skry @GossiTheDog Hmm nope, can't see anything regarding AI training here
@skry @GossiTheDog Maybe it's because I'm in the EU? Checked both the website and android app but I can't find that toggle
@keisatsu @skry @GossiTheDog UK it's definitely there in the privacy section

@keisatsu
EU here, and it's the same.

I wonder if this is a coincidence

@skry @GossiTheDog

@keisatsu @skry @GossiTheDog same in France, no AI settings, I hope this means it's off
@keisatsu @skry @GossiTheDog it's here in the UK, but then we stupidly left the EU
@keisatsu @skry @GossiTheDog It doesn't apply to the EU apparently (based on a convo I've had in a separate thread). 🇪🇺
@keisatsu @GossiTheDog I just went hunting in the app (gosh there are a *lot* of options that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before) and found it under “Data privacy”
@GossiTheDog is this exclusive to specific countries or is their settings UI just so bad that I just can't find that toggle?

@skry @GossiTheDog that page doesn't mention generative AI anywhere for me.
@GossiTheDog
Damn. Just disabled it. When did this POS get in there?
@GossiTheDog It's not under Settings, Account Preferences. I also can't find it under Settings, Data privacy. There is no search feature for settings. Can you tell us where this setting ought to be? I'm guessing that would save a lot of people a lot of time.😉
@alzimon @GossiTheDog I also can't find it. Is it possible this is only outside GDPR or something?
@alzimon @GossiTheDog same, I can’t find it either 😳

@Luk @alzimon @GossiTheDog EU has rules, so lucky you. This is where it is for me:

LinkedIn
@skry @alzimon @GossiTheDog I'm guessing I'm not yet in the dataset, there's no option (my UI is in French, this may be the reason why)
@alzimon @GossiTheDog Maybe EU won’t let them do it. https://www.linkedin.com/mypreferences/d/categories/privacy

@alzimon @GossiTheDog
If on web on your actual computer rather than using their app, then it's Settings & Privacy > Data Privacy > Data for Generative AI Improvement
@alzimon @GossiTheDog in the mobile app I found it under settings>data privacy. But it may not be in all countries yet. Microsoft has a history of pushing features to a subset of countries before forcing them on everyone
@GossiTheDog posts on LinkedIn… I have not worry about that 😆
@GossiTheDog hi, can you please tell us under which section is it? I don't see it under settings in my LinkedIn account from web. Thanks

@skry @GossiTheDog I don't have such thing. Maybe it's not available in EU
@GossiTheDog I found it under the "Data privacy" section of settings -- in the browser at https://www.linkedin.com/mypreferences/d/settings/data-for-ai-improvement

@doomwrench @GossiTheDog I guess this isn't available everywhere.
@GossiTheDog Meanwhile EU accounts....
@GossiTheDog In EU there is no such a setting.
@GossiTheDog the thing where it says you’ve been specially selected based on your expertise to write content on a given subject is not-at-all suspicious.
@GossiTheDog I wonder if this button does anything except give you a false sense of security.
@GossiTheDog Classic move from Big Tech.
@GossiTheDog I can’t find the setting to disable, could someone help me with this?
@GossiTheDog lol stop using LinkedIn in the first place. It’s a clown show unless of course you are focused on finding jobs or hiring people.
@GossiTheDog Is this only in the app? I can't seem to find it in the website and I don't use the app. 🧐

@GossiTheDog

Thanks for this. Probably closing the stable door after the horse has bolted as the scrapping has already been done.

For me in the UK.

Data for Generative AI Improvement

@GossiTheDog Half the "thought leadership" posts on #LinkedIn feel like they were written by #AI anyway - getting an AI to feed on the excrement of another AI will surely lead to chaos
@GossiTheDog EU user here, setting not available, possible #Brexit benefit
@GossiTheDog thank you for the heads up! Australia user here and the setting is there under Data Privacy for me.
@GossiTheDog where is this option located? I'm not seeing it..
@GossiTheDog Doing these kind of things opt-out instead of opt-in is really scummy.
@GossiTheDog Thank you! I did not know that. Just switched it off.

@GossiTheDog
I might be wrong but the fact that they enable the option by default to everyone (but EU it seems) allow themselves to collect all the posts you already made right away.

Turning it off will only prevent them from using your future posts.

So they already have trained their AI with your data.

All companies are using this scumbag approach to get your data: auto opt-in everyone, get all existing data then give the illusion that you can opt-out with a useless option.

I hate this

@GossiTheDog Thanks for this. I go through every now and then and make sure all related crap is off—but this one seems to have snuck in. It's off now!
@GossiTheDog Just checked. I thought I had turned off, but not. Thanks.
@GossiTheDog better yet: don’t use linkedin
@GossiTheDog should this be the other way around, I have to give my consent, and not elect to opt out?
@GossiTheDog Joke's on them. That's where I do all my best shitposting.
@GossiTheDog even better, avoid linkedin
@GossiTheDog ugh thank you! I turned it off. Wish I knew when they had opted me in quietly, but I suppose everything about me has been scraped repeatedly in recent years and I have no control
@GossiTheDog Big Tech has reached unprecedented lows. Pure evil. Please see my profile you'd be amazed.
@GossiTheDog And turn off the "Social, economic, and workplace research" preference setting too!
@GossiTheDog Here are the LinkedIn Preference settings that should be turned off.
