Why aren’t more Star Trek fans talking about ‘The Ark?’ A genuine question all…

It’s an optimistic, forward-looking diverse ensemble-cast SciFi show that flies impudently in the face of all the trauma-burdened, dystopian big-budget peak-streaming tropes.

Are there really only two of us on Mastodon who watch it?

If so, that likely says more about the older age slant of the demographic here than about the show itself. ‘The Ark’ has a dedicated following of Gen Z and younger Millennial fans.

BUT ‘The Ark’ seems to check off all the boxes on the wish lists of older Sci-Fi TV fans here — Low budget and cheesy vfx included, ‘The Ark’ hits many of the points older SciFi television fans say they are looking for.

@AlsoPaisleyCat Ooh! Hasn’t heard of it but added it to my watch queue now. Thanks!
@AlsoPaisleyCat Just watched the first episode and I’m hooked. Thanks again for the recommendation!!

@AlsoPaisleyCat

I was only vaguely aware of it. I've seen the name, but I'm not really in tune with what's on tv. Worth seeing, huh? Are the characters any good?

SyFy has a knack for really unlikable characters. I've seen The Magicians, 12 Monkeys, and The Expanse. They all had elements I liked, but I really disliked the cast. Pretty much all a bunch of assholes. I didn't hate the shows, but I watched more to see what happened next than out of real enjoyment.

@lxskllr

It’s worth watching. I wasn’t sure I would stick with it, but after bingeing the first half season, I became a fan.

Low budget, goofy science and dreary sets notwithstanding. The main characters get more likeable as it goes on. The premise has a lot in common with other exodus from Earth shows, but the creators were smart and didn’t write themselves into the boxes that its 1970s predecessors like Space 1999 and Battlestar Galactica suffered.

‘The Ark’ just keeps going optimistically and surprising the audience by not writing itself into the obvious traps that one expects.

@AlsoPaisleyCat Maybe availability is an issue, just looking and it looks like in the UK it's only available via Sky, which most people don't have.

@AlsoPaisleyCat

Oh, I loved season 1! 😁

I'm just way behind on a lot of things, so I haven't started watching season 2 yet! 😯

First I was obsessed with The Outpost, which had some of the same producers & cast. (That one was a fantasy setting, but had fun exploring science fiction tropes in that setting!)

So I watched the Ark to see what they made next, and I agree, it's fantastic! 😎

I will have to post my reviews here when I am ready to watch season 2! 💖

@5ciFiGirl

So, now I’m wondering about our German Star Trek fans here. Are you watching ‘The Ark’ at all?

I see that both seasons are streaming in Germany on Wow and Magenta.

@forschungstorte, @theresmiling, have you had a chance to view it yet?

@AlsoPaisleyCat

Dang, just guilt us into watching why don't ya?

I promise to watch it and talk about it. As an older Sci-fi fan.

@JoeWynne

I do think you’ll enjoy it. I look forward to your take on it!

Season two is arguably even better than season one. I really hope they get renewed again.

@AlsoPaisleyCat I live tooted my binge of the first season. It’s awful and yet somehow extremely endearing.

Attached: 1 video I've been watching Syfy's The Ark, and... I'm starting to think Dean Devlin intentionally made this show really really bad. Like holy shit is it bad, the production values are in the basement. The special effects are so poor that I start laughing every time. The acting is awful, the writing is absolute ham, every character is a severe stereotype. The sets actually _look_ cheap. Example attached, they're trying to restart the engines, and somehow a keyboard bursts into flames.

@twipped

Glad you find it as fun as I do. It makes no apologies for being what it is.

By the way the woman lead, Canadian Christie Burke who plays Garrett, does all her own stunts. She says that it seems like she’s constantly being put up against 7 ft Serb stuntmen.

@AlsoPaisleyCat thanks for the recommendation, I hadn't heard of this one, but it's now on my radar. If it ever becomes available on sme streaming service I have, I'll give it a try 👍

@claudius Not sure what you’re meaning by ‘sme’ in your case.

In Germany, ‘The Ark’ is available on #MagentaTV and on #Wow (as the #Sky affiliate in Germany).

@AlsoPaisleyCat sorry, that was just me typing stuff wrong 🫣

I meant "some". So if it's anywhere that I subscribe to (or if I ever subscribe to the ones you mentioned, Thanks!) I will check it out.

@AlsoPaisleyCat I just finished watching the second season of #TheArk yesterday with great enthusiasm and am already eagerly anticipating the third season that I hope will come.
And I'm everything you're missing in your post. #GenX and hardcore Trekki since my childhood in the 70s. A highlight of the second season for me was, of course, the reunion with the Eastern Federation ship (alluding to the Cold War) or Kelly's character development, which has parallels to Seven of Nine (ST:Voy).
In short, I totally agree with you that we need more of these positive futures in these politically dark times!

@bembelkicker

I’m still intending to organize a watch/rewatch party and discussion.

Setting up a group chat bot has been a bit more challenging than anticipated given that many well established bots have been looking for new homes since botsin.space closed.

May just go with a basic guppe one.
