#Jury selection began Mon in a federal trial for 3 of the 5 fmr #Memphis police officers charged in connection w/the fatal beating of #TyreNichols after he was pulled over early last year. The 3 could face life in prison if convicted of the #CivilRights counts they face.

Once a jury is seated, prosecutors & defense lawyers will give their opening statements. The trial is expected to last ~3 wks.
2 of the officers involved in the beating — Desmond Mills Jr. & Emmitt Martin III — have pleaded #guilty to using #ExcessiveForce & a #WitnessTampering #conspiracy. As part of the plea agreements, the #DOJ recommended Martin face a sentence not to exceed 40 yrs in prison & Mills to face no more than 15 yrs.

Judge Mark S. Norris, who will make the final sentencing judgment, is also overseeing the trials of the remaining 3 officers: Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley & Justin Smith. They are charged w/ use of #ExcessiveForce, conspiracy to commit #WitnessTampering , #obstruction of #justice & deliberate #indifference to #TyreNichols’s #medical condition.

All 5 officers were also charged at the state level w/counts including 2ndDegree #murder, official #suppression, aggravated #kidnapping, official #misconduct & aggravated #assault. Mills also pleaded #guilty to state charges.State trials for the 4 other officers haven’t yet been scheduled.
#TyreNichols, 29, was a FedEx employee w/a young son. He loved photography, skateboarding & watching the sunset. His parents said he had never been in trouble w/ #police before the traffic stop on Jan 7, 2023.

Video footage depicting #TyreNichols’s beating by members of the department’s #ScorpionUnit — a group of 40 officers tasked w/ patrolling violent-crime *hot spots* throughout the city — sparked protests & outrage in #Memphis, & spurred change.

The special unit was disbanded, & the #DOJ has launched a civil pattern or practice investigation into the city & the department.
