You know how people are always telling each other that it’s okay to suck at things, that having fun doing them is the point? After my first go with pastels, I really hope that’s true…

The nicest thought I’ve had about this is that it vaguely resembles one of those terrible 18th century paintings people had done of their prize cow or pig, in that there’s no real talent on show but you can see what it is. #art #ArtFail #pastels

@LostDiarist I think it’ll take me some time to work out how they’re best used and what they’re most suited for. I tend to be very detailed-focussed so it’s going to be a challenge playing with something so sketchy.

Eventually the plan is to use my woad-coloured pastels from Toulouse to do a picture of the bridge and river there, but I want to get the hang of the cheapies first.

@jarkman I’m hoping to get better with these as I play with them more. They’re very much the opposite of how I like to draw - I tend to be very detailed, whereas these are sketchier, dreamlike. But hopefully that will be good for me in the long run and teach me different approaches.
