Aaron Copland (November 14, 1900 – December 2, 1990)🇺🇸 AKA “The Dean of American Composers” was a pianist, composer, music educator and conductor who composed everything from chamber music to ballets to film scores. He’s known for the deliberate broad accessibility of his music.

While Copland wasn’t officially a member of The Communist Party but he was socially active with members of socialist, communist, anarchist and generally politically left-wing groups/people which unfortunately meant that he was both called before The HUAC and was blacklisted by McCarthy for several years. He later was selected by President JFK and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President LBJ in 1964.

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and/or “Superman” fans will recognize the song because it heavily influenced the composers of the theme songs for both. Also, if you watch the Time’s Square ball dropping which usually features the song as played by The New York Philharmonic

Haydn’s “Symphony No. 45” AKA “The Farewell Symphony” (https://youtu.be/FIpswLApdb4?si=TecGLG_fDk1hYpj3) is a #LaborDay classic b/c it was written during a labor dispute between Haydn's patron Nikolaus I and the musicians he employed to join him in rural Hungary. Nikolaus I wanted everyone to stay longer than expected w/o additional payment. Haydn diplomatically wrote into the score of the final adagio: each musician stops playing & leaves until just two muted violins remain
