@andrew well it’s open source so anyone could fork it and people can self-host their data & migrate their account. Now imagine Mastodon the company was taken over. Your instances are stuck, unless you can fiddle around to move. Also when instances just disappear, uh.. yeah!

Somewhere around Step 6 or 7 (or sooner) social media gets the equivalent of a “gray goo” problem (but applied to AI: AI just infesting social media content at insane levels rendering those services unusable to any discerning persons and a delight to the sea of fools) and around then the cool people just give up and go back to private IRC channels and BBSs. Me, I’m thinkin’ it’s time maybe to re-join The WELL.
