mastodon is the only platform where iโ€™ve had people actively tell me multiple times โ€œhey try using hashtags!โ€

i will never use hashtags

people on tumblr and cohost-type sites will also tell u to tag, but this is a very different kind of tagging experience imo

@jacqueline

people on IRC also use hashtags a lot and say "oh join us on #cool #word on this server" but I join the server and it's just a bunch of weird messages from guys named MOTD and ChanServ there's no discoverability

/s

@epilys beautiful women named ChanServ keep messaging me
@jacqueline Serv-chan noticed me ๐Ÿฅบ
@jacqueline @epilys never give chanserv your password. its not a real chan
@jacqueline tumblr tags are part of the meme tapestry tbf
@gsuberland yeah u can make posts entirely within a tumblr-style tags field. it's a different medium altogether

@jacqueline

Well, the benefit here is that people can follow a tag, meaning they encounter your stuff based on what they're interested in even if they hadn't known about your account previously. But I get the desire not to use them. For the most part I don't either.

@amin @jacqueline what if I don't want people who hadn't previously known about my account to encounter my stuff? What then?
@jacqueline I constantly keep forgetting to add hashtags... this is the main reason for my toot edits! ๐Ÿคฆ
@esden @jacqueline Aren't hashtags in edits broken? I don't think hashtags in edits federate.
@steven @esden mastodon moment if true
@jacqueline @steven seesh! really? ... I would not put it past the typical mastodon bikesheddery but still... :/

@esden @jacqueline Actually, this might not be true. It might just be a common misunderstanding about how hashtags federate in the first place.

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/25537

Retroactively including a hashtag in a post doesn't seem to propagate the post to instances that follow the hashtag but not the user ยท Issue #25537 ยท mastodon/mastodon

Steps to reproduce the problem Have two users A and B on two different instances User A doesn't follow user B, but they follow the hashtag (at)Example User B makes a post that includes the hashtag ...

@jacqueline I use them so sparingly because I struggle to get past the douchey hustle-and-grind SEO mindset vibe they had on twitter
@jacqueline hash tags are a tool, can be used for good or evil. I like the fact that they can be used to create semantic links between entities in our little universe here.

@jacqueline I donโ€™t use them out of spite because someone tried to mansplain me on hashtag use and it rubbed me the wrong way

Also like in the context of fedi it sounds like if I use them on someone elseโ€™s post Iโ€™m basically paging anyone following that tag to come and look and that might not necessarily be a good thing for the OP
