Well, the benefit here is that people can follow a tag, meaning they encounter your stuff based on what they're interested in even if they hadn't known about your account previously. But I get the desire not to use them. For the most part I don't either.
@esden @jacqueline Actually, this might not be true. It might just be a common misunderstanding about how hashtags federate in the first place.

@jacqueline I donโt use them out of spite because someone tried to mansplain me on hashtag use and it rubbed me the wrong way
Also like in the context of fedi it sounds like if I use them on someone elseโs post Iโm basically paging anyone following that tag to come and look and that might not necessarily be a good thing for the OP
