2020: $7.25
2021: $7.25
2022: $7.25
2023: $7.25
2024: $7.25

Folks, it's time to raise the damn wage already.

@rbreich I'm not sure I agree. I feel minimum wage increases undermine unions. It seems min wages go up each time unions are having a resurgence.
@Jon_Kramer @rbreich Having been in a Union for a while, it was disappointing to know that many, if not all, gave away their "Cost of Living" increase. The workers in the unions need to demand that it be brought back. Having at least an increase in the cost of living allows them to have a gradual increase each year.
@SpicyMai @Jon_Kramer @rbreich a ‘cost of living increase’ does not give workers an increase in wages, it attempts to keep it at the same wage relative to the cost of living. Otherwise without a cost of living increase each year, the workers salary is less each year. Without it, it is wage theft.

@rbreich

Let me fix that for you:

2009: $7.25
2010: $7.06
2011: $6.95
2012: $6.75
2013: $6.65
2014: $6.54
2015: $6.55
2016: $6.46
2017: $6.30
2018: $6.18
2019: $6.08
2020: $5.93
2021: $5.85
2022: $5.44
2023: $5.12
2024: $4.96

@doctormo @rbreich you're adjusting for inflation? Very good point!

@rbreich there should also be a maximum wage

@ArchaeoIain @rbreich

The real problem takers do not earn their income through wages.

@detry @rbreich of course that it true. Just trying to make a point.
I think one of the biggest problems is people buying property as an investment where their profit is at the expense of renters. One simple way of talking about this is about people who buy a house and not a home.
@ArchaeoIain @rbreich
Only if “wage” includes capital gains, stocks, etc. What we actually need is a wealth tax.
@rbreich I do not disagree as I start at 3x that in retail! But the market already demands a higher wage. So the market is working.

@rbreich

By requiring a fresh act of congress for each increase, every year that passes without one requires that increase to be bigger. You can see the evil cunning, right? Since 2009, inflation has averaged about 2.6%/yr. In 2010, that would have meant raising to about $7.45.

Ho, hum, eh?

But today, just to catch up, we'd need it to be about $10.80.

"What?!," they shriek. "You want them to get a 50% raise???"

Minimum wage should automatically go up with inflation, every year.

@Professor_Stevens @rbreich Increaes in minimun wage should be tied to inflation.

@rbreich

Despite all my rage, they still won't raise the minimum wage.

@rbreich show each year in 2024 dollars too.
@rbreich should at least increase by amount of COLA raise each year. Miniscule usually but it would be something.
@rbreich Suppression of workers by the rich has always been to agenda of the gop. Look at the current gop congress and their opposition to anything positive for Americans. They are criminals and traitors.
@rbreich It's like they think inflation is not a thing in that context.
@rbreich I'd love to see this alongside average net worth of fortune 500 CEOs for the same years.
@rbreich
It won't happen without a majority in both houses. Good luck.
@rbreich Its like a modern day slavery in the richest country in the world.
@Hikory1 @rbreich Don't worry that's their goal 0$ dollars per hour.Project greed (2025) has gotten around to it yet.
@rbreich Denver’s is now tied to inflation and is currently 18.29. And today there’s an article, yes the day before Labor Day, lamenting the affect on restaurants. I’m sorry, but if your business can only survive by paying salaries so low your staff can’t afford a home, healthcare, etc. then your business should fail.

@rbreich It's time to stop *needing* to raise it every year.

2% of rent.

Let the minimum hourly wage be 2% of the median monthly rent on housing units in the county or parish where the work is to be performed.

It goes up with inflation, or at least a major component of it, and pits employers versus landlords to either raise wages or lower rents.

@rbreich According to the Fed Reserve Bank of MN inflation calculator that generous $7.25 minimum wage only gets 68% of the purchasing power today that it had back in 2009.
@rbreich You can raise it. We did it in Mexico: after being essentially static for 40 years, federally controlled Minimum wage was raised about 100% in real terms over AMLOs six year mandate. The numbers are in and 5 million people stepped out of poverty. Still long ways to go but with a bit of political will it can be done.
@rbreich And you kindly didn't show CEO pay over the same timeline. They should thank you, bastids!
@rbreich
It should be tripled and tied to inflation.
@rbreich
wages adjusted for inflation since the 1970s: $7.25

And take money from the hard working billionaire class? I think not, sir!
