What if I told you that a 32 year old German woman unexpectedly pulls out a knife and starts to stab passengers in a bus, injuring 6 passengers, three critically. Three muslimas, fearing for their children, throw themselves at this woman, manage to wrestle the knife away from her and keep her down until the situation can be resolved. Oh? You didn't hear about that? Well. It just happened. Last Friday. (article in German) https://www.t-online.de/nachrichten/panorama/kriminalitaet/id_100479780/siegen-drei-muslimische-muetter-stoppten-messer-angreiferin.html

You would think these three selfless heroes are now all over the media, telling their stories and getting the praise and respect they absolutely deserve. But nope. I guess it's not clickbait-y enough of a story. But I think this shows that we are surrounded by good people, without that needing to be a big story. In this case it should be a big story, however, IMHO.
@jwildeboer So good to read stories where people react to help / protect others.

@GinevraCat @jwildeboer

Though honestly, that seems to be the default in most attacks. It's just something media and populists focus less on. Fear sells. Solidarity less so, it seems.

No. Solidarity sells and can be made clickbaity. The problem is that the media prefer to disseminate fascist point of views, because they are fascists.

Things would be much easier uf people came around to recognize the situation as such. This especially includes journalists who themselves strive to do the right thing, but fail to acknowledge that their employers are controlled by fascist venture capitalists.

@RefurioAnachro @GinevraCat @jwildeboer

I disagree. While we have shitty media like Springer, that's not the general situation. Also not how the dynamic works.

Stuff gets reported by media, especially public-law and local ones, but also the major publishers. That's also how you know about the three mothers stopping the attacker.

But society and politicians have a strong "could this happen to me" filter. Which is very human. This determines what gets press conferences and web traffic.

@RefurioAnachro @GinevraCat @jwildeboer

I think this is one dynamic at play here. And I think that's one of the reasons why there's much less echo to femicides. Or to violent crime in asylum seeker housing.

The other aspect is "Can I blame someone". That's imho the reason why people killed by traffic or by folks with mental health problems receive much less attention. And also why there's an uptick in reactions if the perpetrator is from a group that's easy to other.

@RefurioAnachro @GinevraCat @jwildeboer

As for "solidarity sells". This year Germany got a new naturalisation law. It's a really big deal. Children born in Germany get German citicenship. Dual nationality without restrictions. Naturalisation deadlines were reduced from 8 to 5 years (or even 3 under some circumstances).

On mastodon, every fart an asshole politician does gets echoed and commented. But there was almost complete silence on this German milestone.

"Can I blame someone"

I agree that that is easy to concoct and sells just as well, but it's absolutely not the only game in town. That the media focusses on this is entirely on them. They want it, they are giving fascism room, because that's what they are!

@billiglarper @GinevraCat @jwildeboer

@jwildeboer

They should have done that in France. They would have gotten citizenship, the ordre Le merit, a Selfie with macron and a fresh baguette.

To get the Bundesverdienstkreuz in germany, you need to rescue people from knive attacs not once, but repeated Times. Or you can be a politicion for some decades, but then you need citizenship.

@jwildeboer although thankfully not involving violence, I was looking on Nextdoor of all places a man of foreign ancestry who works hard in skilled trades had his tools stolen from the trailer by white English people (known street drinkers and addicts) - luckily he had a CCTV scheme on his doorway so got all the footage, and to be fair all the locals provided him with info (including possible names of suspects) that he can send to the Police..
@jwildeboer Please don't repeat the premature framing of mental health issues. It's ableist.
@project1enigma You think that should be the important focus? That I might act ableist? OK, then.
@jwildeboer One can focus on more than one thing at the same time.

@jwildeboer And it's the usual pattern. Perpetrators are framed as the Other. Because "we" could never do anything bad, could we. When racism works they use racism. When everything else fails, it's mental health stigma.

Even though statistically mentally ill people are more likely to become victims. But not more likely to become perpetrators.

@jwildeboer That is even if this perpetrator might be mentally ill, this doesn't even imply causality but still contributes to mental health stigma. Which is sometimes deadly too.
@project1enigma I don't want the focus to shift, so I simply removed the mental problem part. Have a nice day!
@jwildeboer Thanks. Have a nice day too.
@project1enigma I believe _in this case_ you are overreacting by calling out ableism. You could also have called out misogyny as the perpetrator was identified as a woman. Or ageism.
@jwildeboer
@jwildeboer Damn. That's, terrible. I hope those 3 people recover well and those 6 people can mentally recover. Knives are more dangerous than you think. You don't need a gun to kill a person. Glad they took her down.
@rooktallon @jwildeboer You can basically use anything as a weapon. I don't think knives are the problem.
@jwildeboer That's terrifying, but those women were incredibly brave to step in. Surprising this hasn't been more widely reported. Do you come across stories like this often?
@missgaia Not very. Because they often don't get reported outside of the region where it happened :(

@missgaia @jwildeboer

Unless the attacker is a PoC, there's not much national interest. Perhaps if multiple strangers are killed by the attacker.

@jwildeboer schrecklich ☹️☹️☹️
@jwildeboer this sounds very American. Sad to hear our messed up ways are spreading (the attacker that is)
@zephyrxero We can at least manage to stop this madness without guns. That's A Damn Good Thing in my book.
@jwildeboer
*BREAKING NEWS*
Three muslim women try to steal knive from german woman!
*BREAKING NEWS* / Very sad irony 😒

@jwildeboer
Thank you for sharing this. It is indeed newsworthy for a number of reasons. MSM is very quick to jump on any crime where a muslim is the perpetrator. Moreover this was women who stopped an attack. Phenomenally brave 🩷

"Wenn ich mitkriege, dass das Bürgerinnen und Bürger mit Migrationshintergrund waren, ich finde, das kann ja auch ein bisschen stolz machen", sagte Nordrhein-Westfalens Innenminister Reul. "Diese Gesellschaft ist viel stärker, als wir glauben."
⬇️
"When you consider that these were citizens from a migration background, it makes you justifiably proud. This society is a lot stronger than we think" - Home Secretary NRW Reul .

@jwildeboer
And Germans still vote for fascist parties in the East and feel great about it...reunification was a big mistake. The East is just too stupid.
@jwildeboer It was just an unhinged #white #woman, not a socially dangerous #poc male. Nothing to see here, please move on...
@jwildeboer ideally we should only report about people and not need to mention their religion. But I get that the media focus on almost only negativety about Muslims in Germany. So to see something good reported feels like a breath of fresh air.

#Politik #Messerattacken #Merz

Siegen?

Ohh jeh, das ist doch Sauerland, da ist doch der #FotzenFritze her. Hoffentlich wird der jetzt nicht sauer!

@jwildeboer

@jwildeboer woah, that's absolutely crazy.
@jwildeboer The title "Three muslims involved in knifing attack" would get more readers, but perhaps some would just read the title.
@jwildeboer I wonder if the police could have wrestled her down with, say, 11 armed officers instead of shooting or suffocating her. Maybe we should replace the police by such non-armed sisters of mercy.
@jwildeboer Not heard in Spain so far.
At all.
