A good way to educate non-technical people on just how bad mandated government back doors are to encrypted services is this analogy:

"Imagine the government mandated that everyone keep a spare key for their front door in a specific location, but don't worry, they'll make it illegal for anyone but law enforcement to use it so it's OK."

But of *course* the backdoor credentials to all of everyone's high-value private data would never leak or be abused by bad actors (authorized and otherwise). Right?

@backupbear we already do that. The key is called a SWAT team. Practically speaking, they can use it any time they like.

And if your audience is slightly more technical you can mention it's like mandating that all homes have a password protected key lockbox (like at vacation rentals for cleaners and apartment complexes for postal workers). And they all have the exact same passwords and can never be changed without everyone agreeing to order a new key lockbox. Only the lockbox manufacturer and the police know the code.

@backupbear @kyhwana Srsly tho, I think acceptance would be a lot different if the mandated location were centralized, rather than being co-located with the building.
