There are lots of great RPGs out there, many made by small press/indie designers and publishers, toiling away mostly in obscurity.

Share your favorite small press RPG and why you love it so much. Bonus points for links.

@NerdBurgerCraig

My favorite now small #ttrpg is #HeroSystem its a genre agnostic system from the 80s it was much more popular back then but now its very niche.
I mostly play its Super Hero version #ChampionsRPG

Hero System is fairly crunchy and involved in Character Creation and GM preparation but actual play is super easy and straight forward with most rolls being 3d6 :-)

The website of the system: https://www.herogames.com/

There is also a very friendly discord server https://discord.gg/HcUJvJH

and they have a facebook group (I dont have the link to that as i dont use facebook)

Another game that is very promising but currently in beta is Gemini (it got its name before google named their AI crap gemini.)

#GeminiRPG is a new system based on OpenD6 with lots of Hero dna mixed in. it also aims to be genre agnostic but Super Hero games are really nice supported.
GeminiRPG is done mostly by one guy 🙂

Another Game I am interested in but havent had time to look into is #ClementSector by Independence Games. The game is based on the Cepheus Engine which is the OGL implementation of Mongoose Traveller 1e

@NerdBurgerCraig

I really enjoy "Sentinel Comics RPG".

https://greaterthangames.com/product/sentinel-comics-the-role-playing-game-core-rulebook/

My favorite part of this superhero system is its tendency to naturally create those "two page spread" spotlight moments that you want your players to have.

Other features: Fun character creation. Lots of GM affordances to make the game easy to run. Simple system to learn, but deep. Flexible power levels, even within the same group, that work naturally. A gorgeous book. Strong GM advice with good writing. Etc.

Sentinel Comics: The Roleplaying Game - Core Rulebook

In Sentinel Comics: The Roleplaying Game, you and your friends play as comic-book heroes - either from the pages of Sentinel Comics or from your own imagination! Join forces against terrible villains and fight in dangerous environments, all in a tabletop roleplaying game! The core rulebook teache

Greater Than Games

@NerdBurgerCraig The game at the top of my list, for games I'd like to try running, is Salvage Union, from Leyline Press.

I feel it hits sweet spots in several aspects. You can pick up on the vibe just looking at the cover art. It has enough detail for you to envision a setting, without pre-empting you, and it has appealing themes, without being too on-the-nose. It's a lightweight system, but you can geek out about mechs if you want. It's not overfocused on combat.

@NerdBurgerCraig Responding as commentary on just how obscure “toiling away” indie RPG development is…

I'm going to mention a *monster hit* "known by everyone" in the indie RPG world. Like, indie RPG creators aspire to have a game this well known, and will never come close. Yet, I'd wager that a decent percentage of #ttrpg followers have never played it.

For purpose of this example, the game is _Lady Blackbird_, which you can download for free here: http://www.onesevendesign.com/ladyblackbird/.

Lady Blackbird: Adventures in the Wild Blue Yonder

@NerdBurgerCraig https://mausritter.com/ It's small, cheap, easy to understand, expandable and robust. So happens that some elements match ones I myself was thinking of when considering what I don't like too much about DnD.
It's like the one TTRPG I'd play with kids.
Mausritter

Take up the sword and don the whiskers of a brave mouse adventurer in Mausritter, the rules-light fantasy adventure roleplaying game.

@nosville22 @NerdBurgerCraig Mausritter is like a manual on how to make simple and concise OSR game. I am still inspired by it.

Not sure how small it is but I also love whole set of 2400 games, minimalistic yet evocative https://jasontocci.itch.io/2400
