Ran into this tape this weekend. #sony branding was always a mystery to me. UX #cassettes name was used for both BOTL & TOTL type II tape. UX as entry level and UX-Pro as top of the line (technically, there was an all ceramic casing model for the Japanese market). This one is from 1986, with ceramic guides for extra stability. I recorded it in 2001. Kept those & Sony #Metal Master for my own original material only for master mixdown. For multitrack, I used mostly TDK SM Pro. #tape #music #chrome

Even with noise reduction off, I drove this hot and is perfectly fine. It is #ambient #electronic #music. It also features a #roland #tr808 in a non conventional way. It generates half the ambience of the first track (cote A / Side A).

This was recorded right after Test Tones VI which was all about using percussions in a non standard way and pushing effects to their limit. The 2001 album continued that experimentation, but more in a #cinematic #soundtrack approach

Definitely recommend headphones if listening on a mobile device. There are some effects that will be missed otherwise (Boss Octaver OC2 for example...)

Beside the almost unrecognizable Roland TR808, guess what main synth I used. I also used an Ensoniq eps16+, to get those very slow noises, but the pads are from a synth processed through some lexicon effects and a TEAC 4 track reel to reel. By 2001 it was almost an antique... any guess?

If you guessed digital, you got that part right.

Casio VZ1 from the 1980s. IPD synthesis with ring modulation and 8 modules (or “operators” in yamaha dx speak). Taking phase distortion engine way beyond the casio CZ line (or yamaha dx for that matter).

I further used the TEAC reel to reel to change speed and alter the sound. External fx were lexicon vortex and reverb.

Attached: 1 image A full 2 years before the Roland D20, Casio released the CZ230s in 1986. Take a Casio CZ101 synth, a programmable Casio RZ1 drum machine, add a sequencer, a speaker and what do you have? A workstation. Since it works on battery power, we could even say it is the first mobile music workstation. It is missing the floppy drive but you can use ram cards.
