Why? Just, why. Why is everything a Discord now?

I hate it.

Discord is a CHAT APP!

If you have static information to convey, that does not belong in a CHAT APP!

IT SHOULD BE A WEBSITE!

@dachary @patterfloof today I discovered a set of websites for maps of Pokémon go, gyms, stops, etc. the site tells you what it does... To view anything there's just a discord login. Can I nuke these "websites" from orbit?
@dachary Me: Oh this is an interesting new library or app. I wonder how it works?
<clicks around, can't find docs other than very high level things, see "join our discord">
Me: oh well I guess it isn't that interesting
<closes tab>
@dachary me every time some project's "documentation" is just a link to their Discord.

@dachary Because webdev bs made it so people think you need some node based build process and k8s clusters to have a website rather than typing html in notepad and uploading it. 🤬

They've totally destroyed the feeling that normal people can click "view source" and learn to make a website.

@dalias @dachary hot take: vilifying frames was a mistake

@mark @dachary "Frames are evil because they break navigation/back button/url bar".

Modern React apps: "Hold my beer."

@dalias @dachary It also makes so little sense; we could just as easily have had some meta tag indicating which frame should be used for the url, and another for the page to indicate it should be wrapped in a frameset
@dalias @dachary I mean, after all, you don't even need a web page.
Use a public wiki or, if you want a web page, some simple thing as GitHub Pages or #Neocities. It works…
@dachary
also it's literally encouraging people to ask the same question over and over and over again.
a support page/a wiki with a forum is by far superior, just from a contributor time management perspective.
@Yuvalne @dachary And a lot of people respond to those repeated questions with an eyeroll and a "just scroll back", too... when the last time they gave the question a straight answer was years ago.

@Yuvalne @dachary tbh thats most forums and chats that have existed forever. The number of forum posts asking a question I'm searching for with the first reply saying 'use the search function' is too damn high.

Fuck discord tho

@dachary Something is broken. I can't favorite this more than once.
@dachary I don’t understand the problem. Microsoft Teams chats work perfectly well for documentation in corporate environments. 😜
@jeffsussna @dachary you probably use onenote too
@dachary @krolden yes but I’m not proud of it
@dachary
Indeed it is! There have been multiple pushes by certain individuals at work to migrate all our online community to Discord (albeit from Basecamp which is hardly great) but it has yet to fly, most people just don't bother to use it but those who do seem to think it's God's gift to the world of online communications!
It really isn't.
@dachary A website? You mean where just, like, ANYBODY could read it?
@dachary @BafDyce Today I discovered that Ubisoft closed their entire spectrum of game forums and moved everything to Discord.
A decade of knowledge, information and my memories of the olden times are lost.
@dachary I'll also accept a well-organised Gopher site.

@dachary

If it can't be easily printed, it isn't documentation.

As much as I hate both markdown and pdf; If it's not documented in either of those or simple text - it isn't documented and therefore doesn't exist.

@dachary but discord keeps everything forever... Isn't that the same thing? A website when you delete things they are gone, discord however, those photos you put up as documentation but then deleted, they're still out there on a server if you have the url... That's as static as it gets isn't it? /s

Honestly I'm kind of over discord and wish there was a better platform.

@dachary Louder for the fandoms and software releases in the back!
