Over 60 billionaires have now publicly endorsed Trump, hosted a fundraiser for him, or contributed to Trump aligned PACs.

Why are they rallying behind him? Tax cuts, mostly. But there's more.

The more Trump tears down democracy, the safer the oligarchy becomes.

Be warned.

@rbreich Good idea to start calling them "oligarchs" instead of "billionaires"!
@rbreich Russia hasn't been great for all it's billionaires. It's a poor strategy to back authoritarians who walk away from rule of law; DeSantis and Disney should be the canary in the coal mine for the oligarchs. Lurches to authoritarianism wreck economies: Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and Turkey are examples. I'd say China is the counterexample but that story is not over yet as Xi is now dictator for life and that arrangement doesn't usually end well.
@rbreich this is still the candidate preferred by the white guys in rustbelt?

@rbreich

I'm sure the recent antitrust ruling against Google played a role.

@rbreich How many billionaires are there in total?
@rbreich Answering my own question... There are around 750 US billionaires at the moment. Seems like wayyyy too many given the number of people working their asses off to barely get by.

@rbreich

What will it take to convince the rich bums that the fat orange albatross is a bad investment? You'd think the three right wings would be a pretty clear hint. Or maybe the VP pick of an albatross?

It's like the fake GOP is wearing one albatross around it's neck, and that albatross is wearing a second albatross. And the whole mess is spinning crazily as all the wings flap only to the right side. Can't even flop-fly into the "bird killing" windmill...

#orangeAlbatross

@rbreich will probably also get political positions of some nature for their advantage s
@rbreich
And when Trump is gone, the billionaires will hire someone else to protect them
@rbreich and regulations in favor for companies. #labour #environment modern #slavery etc. #usa #trump
@rbreich To them Trump is simply the best President money can buy. 🤷
@rbreich
The amazing thing is that somehow he has convinced the working class folks that he cares about them. Of course that is not true, but the fact they are in a cult means they can't tell that he isn't being honest or sincere.
These Are The Billionaires Supporting Trump’s Campaign

Several other billionaires, including Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman and casino mogul Miriam Adelson, have expressed plans to donate to Trump, but have yet to make the contributions.

@rbreich the oligarch strategy for the US will work out as well as the Boeing strategy for planes - short term gains are great who cares about long term stability
@rbreich We all tend to support that which benefits our personal situation. Billionaires are no different.
@rbreich
They picked one of the stupidest men alive to be their Orange Putin.

@rbreich

They are in trouble and they know it.

Trump is their get-out-of-jail-free card.

It is the only thing left to hang their hat on.

@rbreich Trump's Division-progressing as he planned

@rbreich
Martin Wolf at the Financial Times:

...The question arises: are the oligarchs who are trying to make Trump president and JD Vance vice-president, the latter a man who has declared he would not have certified that election, about to learn what it means to have a tyrant as president? Yes, someone who attempts a coup against the electoral process — the very heart of democracy — is a would-be tyrant. So is someone who may fill his government with people personally loyal to him. Nobody then can truly be safe, except loyalists and sycophants....

The plutocrats who support Trump may remain safer than Berezovsky. But can they really be as free as they want? Yes, a further erosion of democracy might protect them from interference by the elected politicians they detest. But the men they put in power, in their stead, have a tendency to turn themselves into absolute rulers. Nobody can then be truly safe.

@rbreich

They can be stripped of their excess. And their delusion of safety from justice.

@rbreich Can you expand on your statement on how tearing down democracy results in a safer oligarchy? In what ways specifically?

Thank you for your work.
