When horses were replaced by cars there was a lot of resistance & scaremongering by the incumbent horse industry.

Here's an old anti car advert by a horse carriage company.

Technology transitions are always characterised by resistance from incumbents who want to keep their assets and continue to gain from them.

@janrosenow I don’t know if it’s true but I heard it took New York City about 12 years to go from no cars on the streets to banning horses on most streets.

@janrosenow Mobility transition is difficult even when technology stays same. Habits & preferences take long to change.
In Sweden road traffic changed overnight on 3.9.1967 from left to right lane, causing severe confusion.

It takes courage and leadership, but today everyone surely agrees that it was necessary to complete the change as quickly and resolutely as possible. Comprehensively, without exceptions or transition period.

@janrosenow There's always scare-mongering, no doubt. But here's also hype on the other side. Neither is reasonable and criticism should be examined for its merit, rather than being discarded prematurely.

New technology brings new problems. There are always trade-offs. It's good to be aware of them.

@janrosenow This was the heyday of Luddism. There's still some of that around.
