In my own words, Classic Star Trek wasn't woke, it was progressive. I think people complaining about new Trek being "political" are sometimes legitimately reacting to its insincerity and vacuity, like that of a war profiteer wearing a rainbow on their lapel. New Trek trickles down from culture, it "references" it, just like it references Star Trek.
Star Trek was in reality far more radical, political, whatever: it engaged and led the culture and was a product of its time but strove to be timeless. Contemporary Trek reflects a lack of imagination. It's weighed down, out of timelessness, by the lethargic, contemporary public imagination, of an a moment in time where our single common consensus appears to be our widespread recognition of institutional failure, corruption, and rot.
I only watched the first two seasons, and can barely believe I sat through either of them. Thank you, sincerely, for spoiling Season 3 for me so I never have to watch it.
