To be honest, I don't see how you can mix up Slovakia and Slovenia - vak vs. ven.
The words can't be the reason (except in Czechia and Slovakia, according to the map), so I guess it will be a (lack of) familiarity issue.
If your mental picture of both countries amounts to 'some place in Eastern Europe' or 'once behind the Iron Curtain', of course you'll struggle to tell their names apart.
