This is fantastic news. While we often joke about our stereotype of drinking, the reality is far from humorous. The toll alcohol takes on lives and families is devastating, and the strain it places on our healthcare system is staggering.

@Miriamm I love a drink but this is really good to hear.

Ireland also has (had? I haven't lived there in 14 years) a really unhealthy attitude towards it. Always about getting utterly trollied. Couldn't just have 2-3 relaxed ones of an afternoon.

No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health

The risks and harms associated with drinking alcohol have been systematically evaluated over the years and are well documented.

@Miriamm "Irish population continues to age" would probably be an equally accurate headline
@Miriamm Hope Scotland follows suit, like we did with the smoking ban, to great effect.
@Miriamm If we, as humans knew how to limit ourselves we wouldn't be in the shape we're in.
@Miriamm
A bit lower down in the Irish Times article….
“…More than a few were also quoted as stating ‘Boy, these punches really hurt now! I never remember them being this bad before…’ “
It's a win but it will take a while to adapt to the media
@Miriamm 👍👍👍 legalize cannabis

@Miriamm

The did drink less before 1987?

@Miriamm Not sure there is a reason to be happy. Users switched to cocaine. No tax intake and probably not an improvement.
@Miriamm Most of the people in my social circle have given up alcohol or have greatly reduced their intake, switching & enjoying the zero alcohol beers & wines. No one is missing hangovers, binge eating, poor sleep, leg cramps, etc.
@Miriamm
Similar in Australia. Millennials started the trend & Gen Z seem to be continuing.
