The corridor was established as a buffer zone controlled and patrolled by Israeli armed forces as part of the 1979 peace treaty with Egypt.
It fell under Egyptian control after Israeli forces withdrew from Gaza in 2005, becoming Gaza’s only link with the outside world not controlled by Israel – as Israel maintained a land, sea and air blockade on all other sides of the Strip.
