despite the term’s appropriation by the US far right, “libertarianism” was originally a left wing, anarchist, and communist movement. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism

real libertarians sometimes call US far right guys “propertarians” - their philosophy has very little to do with freedom (& tends to be a gateway into authoritarian / fascist sympathies). Anyway, that said, I couldn’t personally care less about reclaiming the term - but it’s sort of a funny chain of ideological custody.

Libertarianism - Wikipedia

@risibledog For what it's worth I've always called real libertarians "socialists who haven't yet followed it through to a workable solution."
@risibledog and liberal originally was used for people we consider libertarians now, focusing on free market and personal freedoms. What is your point?

@Jaxay I agree that both liberals & US “libertarians” are pretty susceptible to fascist sympathies / conversions (tho liberals often tend to be more hesitant).

Beyond that, I’m not sure what your question is.

@risibledog I'm saying it is a stupid argument to talk about the meaning of a word, as words change often.

@Jaxay it wasn’t an argument, just a historical fact about the word’s funny ideological chain of custody.

I think David Graeber had some pretty interesting / amusing genealogy on the changing historical meanings of “freedom” prior to present-day political shorthand slogans like “personal freedom” or “free markets” (and even prior to Marx’s “double freedom” quip)…

Maybe in “Debt: The First 5000 Years” - it’s a great read!
