My touchstone for fotobook excellence is Gregory Heisler's 50 Portraits. There's not a page, whether it contains text or an image, that you can't learn something from. There's not a photograph that doesn't captivate.

I think about how hard it is for a photographer to get a book deal, and half the reason is publishers pushing this kind of garbage instead!
FYI here's the Heisler in my LibraryThing library. It shows a couple of reviews, the blurb, ISBN, and that utterly stunning dust jacket illo!

It is outstanding, isn't it? Mind you, Heisler is a master of portraiture.
I don't shoot people any more, in fact I don't shoot much except my cats and my cooking any more, but I really would love to get back into it.

@ewen Your assessment was spot on. It's filler for a motel lobby book and magazine rack. I only worry that the friend who gifted it to you might be insulted.
