Just fixed the motherboard on my #iMacG5. It worked the last time I used it a couple years ago, but today when I tried to turn it on, it just played some horrible crackly noise though the speakers. Sure enough the 1800uF caps on the RAM power supply were bulged. I replaced them with some too tall 1000uF ones I had on hand and it boots again! I've ordered some properly fitting 1800uF ones that I'm going to install once they're here.

I had Void Linux PPC on the hard drive, but the port has been discontinued now and I've forgotten the login password so it's new OS time. I remember that the nvidia GPU didn't work properly on Linux, so after going through all my drawers looking for a 16gb flash drive I'm installing OSX 10.5.4. It seems that a distro called Adelie still supports this old powerPC chip so I might check that out in the future.
@Sandelinos neat. these usually suffer from exploding caps on the PSU. first time i've seen the ram ones go!
