I initially wanted to try and find various, even convoluted, ways of running the most used #Windows apps on #linux

Since none of them cooperated, no matter the technique, app, or version of Wine I tried, I decided instead to make a video highlighting how Wine definitely isn't a solution for anything other than games:

@thelinuxEXP not being able to run adobe or office doesnt mean you can't run a ton of other Windows executables. Bit extreme to cast it to 'only for games'
@thelinuxEXP
Unfortunately, yes, I used Wine and Codeweavers Crossover for years to run MS apps under Linux, but nowadays, it is too challenging and resource-demanding. The last decent version of Office that was truly usable was 2010/2013.
Currently, it is much better to use web apps, with all their limitations.
@thelinuxEXP
And just in case, yes: it is much better using LibreOffice, but if you need to exchange documents with other people using MS shit, it is neither practical nor safe.

@thelinuxEXP

I've had some success getting old car service manual apps (win 95 + xp) from the 90s - 00s running under Wine/Bottles but that is far from mainstream and is ancient apps technology so probably easy to do. It was not straightforward though!

@thelinuxEXP here's a link to make the full affinity suite v2 work well on wine:

Guide to install and run the Affinity suite by Serif, on Linux using Wine

@Cristian86539 @thelinuxEXP omg i'll give it a try tonight as it's the last piece of software that I still use my M1 mac for 🙌
@thelinuxEXP I'll try and watch this after my shift. But yeah, I've noticed this too.
@thelinuxEXP Tbh many game installers don't work properly either, using warez obtained games on Linux with wine can also be a pain...
@thelinuxEXP It's a little misleading to shorten the claim to "Wine only works for games", considering Wine's capabilities. The general rule of thumb is that, software targeting older versions of Windows (95, 98, Me, 2000 and XP, sometimes 7) has better support, and productivity programs not needing GPU or obscure Windows APIs have better support. Do not expect Wine to run anything relying on custom Windows drivers.
Coming from my own experience as I'm quite involved with the DTM scene, which requires usage of Windows programs, most work just fine with some having hiccups; those from the tracker scene have similar experiences. I've also met several others using professional DAWs for music production, they also have few problems.
For office work, artwork creation, photo aftertouch, etc... Situation on those is dire. Maybe it's due to the Wine developers' focus isn't on getting productivity programs working. The hiccups I mentioned before have all been filed as bugs, which have been unresolved for quite some time.
@thelinuxEXP I installed the Windows Programms BricsCAD and AIMP simply with the #HeroicGamesLauncher both work well at my #SteamDeck and #LinuMint Laptop
@thelinuxEXP Windows is a dependency hell so I'm not surprised.
@thelinuxEXP I'd love to see an interview with the codeweaver and/or steam devs so they can explain why we can get a ton of games to work on wine but not standard windows apps. Great content. Keep up the great work.
@cslinuxboy I’ll see if I can arrange that!
@thelinuxEXP @cslinuxboy It would be great if it could be done.
@thelinuxEXP What #Valve has done with #proton and #Wine is simply amazing. I was never a big PC gamer until recently because of this.
@thelinuxEXP @cslinuxboy I'll just throw in a "ditto" to express interest in this as well.
@cslinuxboy @thelinuxEXP dude, they make their money selling games. They probably don't see any demand or market for other programs. It is absolutely there, it's just not in their view or in their wheelhouse!

@thelinuxEXP I agree, to give a concrete example, I have been fighting for about fifteen years every September to make Pronote work (each year the client and server are incompatible with those of the previous year). It is used in most middle and high schools in France. Some years I manage it, others I can't (fortunately there is the web interface, but it offers fewer possibilities), but it is never easy and there are always annoying bugs.

Installer Pronote 2023 64 bits sous Linux

Après des années sans grand changement, les étapes nécessaires à l'installation de Pronote sous Linux ont largement évolué. Côté négatif ...

@thelinuxEXP my ex employers disagree: microsoft word 2003 runs in wine on server to convert .rtf file to .doc, and has for the past decade
@SRAZKVT Yeah, that’s 20 years old though, so that’s not really what people want to run these days
@thelinuxEXP
Hey grate video, I wonder one thing. I believe I read somewhere that the steam launcher was not recommended to use as a flatpack and therefore bottles(with proton) would probably also not work great. Did you consider testing using native steam client on Linux and use the “Add non steam game”?
Perhaps using proton with the steam client would make it work better in some way?
Keep up the good work.

@thelinuxEXP I would really enjoy an interview with codeweavers devs 😁

Steuplé 🙏

@thelinuxEXP I gotta figure that in WINE the framework just isn't fully there for all of the libraries that productivity apps expect to find on a full Windows installation. I'm sure especially for O365 that .NET is part of that, but to hear it from Codeweavers themselves would certainly be enlightening.
@thelinuxEXP Very depressing to see 😭 I just bought Affinity suite. Thx so much for checking it out!
@thelinuxEXP I have one last Windows app I won't give up because it's by far the best of its genre (MLO; https://www.mylifeorganized.net; top task and project manager, despite sad name) and it's a Ukrainian product by developers who continue under attack. Runs under WINE. I hate WINE so run it on a low power mini desktop and connect to it remotely when necessary (not interested in cloud syncing). Didn't run under Bottles on fresh install of Mint 22. 😕 Alas, I can't see that a Linux version is likely.

@thelinuxEXP Is Proton really usable for any emulation? I know it goes upstream usually, but maybe it has some GPU tweaks and such could help?
