#Russian navy trained to target sites inside Europe with nuclear-capable missiles – The #Financial_Times

The #Russian Navy practised nuclear strikes against European countries during exercises in case of a potential conflict with #NATO. This follows from secret documents prepared between 2008 and 2014, which were examined by the #Financial_Times journalists.

The documents obtained by the publication, which were prepared for #Russian officers,

contain a list of targets for missiles capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear charges. A total of 32 targets for the #Russian fleet in Europe are indicated on the maps created for the presentation.

Thus, #Russian #Baltic_Fleet will have to attack facilities in #Norway and #Germany. Among them are the naval base in #Bergen, as well as radar stations and special forces facilities.

The #Northern_Fleet, in turn, could hit defence industry facilities, including a shipyard in #Britain's #Barrow_in_Furness, where warships and submarines are built.

The documents note the advantage of using nuclear weapons early in a conflict. It is also said that the high manoeuvrability of the fleet allows for sudden and massive strikes from various directions. However, it is specified that nuclear weapons should be used in combination with other means of defeat.

At the same time, as the #Financial_Times emphasizes, #Russia has never previously acknowledged the existence of such strikes in its doctrine.
