RIP Apple USB Superdrive πŸͺ¦
2008-2024

It seems likely that Apple has killed off its external USB CD/DVD reader/burner as stock dwindles in-store & online.

@BasicAppleGuy Would fit under my Mac Mini perfectly... Now I kind of want one.
@jenzi it’s a little smaller than a Mac mini, but you could tuck it under.
@BasicAppleGuy Adios πŸ‘‹
@marcus the law mandates you throw it away by midnight.

@BasicAppleGuy I still occasionally use my old USB Superdrive, acquired when Apple stopped shipping Macbooks with them built-in.

That was… almost ten years ago!?

@BasicAppleGuy I wish I'd bought one, but years ago I removed the optical drive from my old PowerBook G4 and put it in a slim enclosure from OWC. I plugged it into my M1 MacBook Pro yesterday and it still works. πŸ‘

Also, it makes me happy that I can still pop an audio CD into my Mac and have it play in Apple Music. πŸ“€

@BasicAppleGuy I’m not dead yet!

@BasicAppleGuy I still have mine. I do, from time to time, need to rip CDs with it.

Although we’re just noticing stocks dwindling, I reckon Apple hasn’t manufactured one of these for quite some time!

Dr. Moddnstine isn't the first modder to build a new PC into an old IBM case, but might be the first to build a working 128GB floppy disk to go with it.
