A reminder that everything being shared online about the Southport attacker is not real, and is being reshared by media outlets in Russia to peddle anti-migrant fears (and by IT people on LinkedIn).

The person also isn’t called Ali Al-Shakati, and did not arrive by boat.

BBC News
Oh what a surprise, social media posts have lead to a riot in Southport.

Rioting is still continuing in parts of the UK due to social media posts about the Southport attacker.

People are turning up with “STOP THE BOATS” banners.

The attacker was a kid born in Wales.

UK protests: More than 90 arrests made at far-right demonstrations

Areas including Hull, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, and Belfast saw unrest - but not all demonstrations turned violent.

I used to live just down the road from this in Liverpool. Locals burnt it down and stopped the fire brigade from putting out the fire.
Twitter unbanned Tommy Robinson, which is driving a lot of this. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cl4y0453nv5o
Violent Southport protests reveal far-right organising tactics

Online influencers, rather than formal leaders, are mobilising the extreme right on the streets.

Oh good, Elon’s jumped on the “stop the boats” bandwagon now.. for a killer who was born and raised in the UK.

After burning down libraries and attacking mosques, the mob have now moved onto Holiday Inns.

Somebody is going to end getting killed if this continues.

It is blatant racism and those involved and those who enable it - including Elon after unbanning Tommy and engaging with this stuff on his own platform - should feel ashamed of themselves.

Just over a hundred anti-immigrant protests/riots were planned in the UK today, but only a handful of people turned up to them - instead tens of thousands of anti-racism people turned up, and there’s been no violence.

One of the people jailed who posted material on Twitter to stir up racial hatred during recent unrest across the UK is being paid £1400 a month by X.

X - who can’t pay their office rent and other bills - led by Musk, who said there would be civil war in the UK, is literally paying the people who are trying to start civil war.

For those who don’t know, Twitter do ad revenue sharing for viral accounts nowadays - you get money from replies, so it incentivises rage bait accounts. Eg they pay Andrew Tate and Tommy Robinson.

In the interests of transparency they wanted to pay me about £4K a month but I told them to get fucked.

@GossiTheDog The same mechanic is responsible for all those AI images on Facebook.
@GossiTheDog I don’t know if anyone has ever told you this but you’re a quality human being and I - as I’m sure do we all - appreciate you.

@GossiTheDog Let me get this straight: Twitter would pay me more money to tweet 280-character lies about healthcare, than the Commonwealth of Virginia is paying me to write long, researched policy papers about our healthcare system?

And there are still people asking how the world got this bad? Like seriously, people are actually asking "I think society has a perfectly good rewards system and I can't figure out why on Earth all of our priorities seem so misplaced?"

@GossiTheDog why not just take the free money, if you post anyway?

@ejim @GossiTheDog

Loyalty vs skill, the existential conflict of our times, which mode of thought you pick is who you are.

For the loyalists, their truths come from their leaders.

For the skilled, their facts come from the universe.

Amusingly for the math-minded, loyalty is itself a skill, but its close practice eventually destroys all other skills the individual may have or seek. When the Great Leader says things you *know* from *fact* are not true, but everybody else is on board with GL, what do you do?

That's who you are.

@GossiTheDog whether they'd *actually* pay you is a whole other thing
@GossiTheDog Would you have to change anything about your posting habits to get 4K a month from X? You could take the money and openly donate it 100% to projects for democracy, antifa or to a labour union on strike against Musk. Or to your Mastodon admin. Maybe that would infuriate Musk enough to stop paying people

@GossiTheDog

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you're okay
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four-star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team

@GossiTheDog Are you sure it isn't RT that's paying him?

@GossiTheDog hate to be nit-picky, but i'm thinking from the perspective of "what would someone who loves elon musk say about this?"

and i think they'd say you're spreading fake news because the bbc article said £1400, not £1700

altho if i've missed anything then lmk, typing this mid-teams meeting lul

@GossiTheDog Justice is way too slow when it comes to thing kind of behaviour.

X should be investigated NOW and not wait ages before a judgement is made. How many other like this guy will act the same way before something is done ?

@GossiTheDog

" ... dark humour.."

"Can't you people take a joke? It's just for the lolz/keks."

"They put you in jail just for saying you're English, etc."

@GossiTheDog while I'd like to see X gone sooner rather than later, the payments are unrelated to him inciting violence. Someone is always paying someone, you could also claim that Tesla Drivers pay for the UK violence because they pay Tesla, Tesla pays Musk, Musk keeps Twitter afloat with his financial backing and Twitter shares ads. All links in this chain are clearly there, yet the value of this statement is questionable at best.
@GossiTheDog I believe the question should be how we can prevent people (including this dude, but also twitter, they take the bulk of the ad-revenue!) from profitiing off of illegal content. I would like to have a law that mandates ad revenues on illegal content to be confiscable - that would create an incentive against further and further lurches to the right in hunt of engagement numbers

@GossiTheDog

@GossiTheDog

Some violence in Finchley - by the cops, against antifascists. The cops were very enthusiastic in protecting the fash.

@GossiTheDog Yeah Walthamstow was one such example of this. Didn't go to the protest itself, but after it broke up I wondered round the streets and went to the local pub which had just opened and were doing a fantastic trade. Everyone seemed very positive and it was a good vibe.
@GossiTheDog exactly what I'd expect from Bristol. They don't disappoint in social issues ❤️
@GossiTheDog that's good to hear! These racists/fascists should be made aware that what they do isn't tolerated and prevent them from causing any more damage.
@GossiTheDog Well done UK people. No room for fash.
@cstross Re: Silent majorities 👆
@GossiTheDog I hope the transcripts and members lists are passed to the police.
@GossiTheDog we are very lucky that terrorists are also tech illiterate
@GossiTheDog one could only dream that UK does to X what US is doing to Tiktok.
@eljefedsecurit @GossiTheDog are you sure, as that is mainly an attack on a foreign government. We wouldn't want the UK to start attacking the US with pinpricks, would we?
@GossiTheDog my kingdom for an EU ban of Twotter.
It should be mandatory for all EU representatives to stop using it.
@GossiTheDog #alttext Former Twitter executive Bruce Daisley says Elon Musk is "an interesting challenge" for the UK, because not only does he own X, he's "a pretty toxic user of the platform himself".
He's largely responsible for bringing Tommy Robinson back onto Twitter, and then as a user of the platform, amplifying his voice to the extent that he has gone from really the bargain basement of politics to being one of the biggest names orchestrating potentially this ongoing racial conflict...
@GossiTheDog ..Musk is playing a pretty pivotal role, and it's why it's such a challenge to try and to prohibit or to regulate what he's actually doing right now. Daisley, who used to be vice president of Europe at Twitter, says the UK needs to bring the Online Safety Act, which was passed by the previous government, into force. It was due to come into force in the 2d half of 2025. If companies don't comply, there is potential for senior leaders of organisations to be held criminally responsible
@GossiTheDog apparently people they thought were Asian. What's happening.
@GossiTheDog It's almost like he has been drinking the Helter Skelter Kool-Aid, and by "almost" I mean "exactly".
@tryst @GossiTheDog Completely ignoring him also works.

@james_inthe_box @tryst @GossiTheDog

My thought exactly. By responding to his baiting they’re giving him legitimacy.

@wiredfire @james_inthe_box @GossiTheDog TBH, there's "responding", as in replying to Tweets, and "responding" as in seriously impeding Twitter's ability to operate in the UK.
jbaggs (@[email protected])

@james_inthe_box @[email protected] @[email protected] Ah yes. I had forgotten how well the strategy of "just ignoring them" works with billionaire fascist agitators. I'm sure he'll just quiet down, or he'll stop having influence if we just say nothing.

Infosec Exchange

@tryst @GossiTheDog

I wasn’t suggesting ignoring is a fix, but I *am* suggesting that responding on official political accounts gives weight to Elmo’s comments which is at best unhelpful and at worst dangerous.

@GossiTheDog What gets me about this is the banality of this particular evil: Holiday Inns? Really?
@dcrooks @GossiTheDog according to the Guardian, the plan was to burn it down because it is housing asylum seekers.
@GossiTheDog and this clown as well

@GossiTheDog Honestly I'm surprised there hasn't been any serious injuries (or worse).

Especially considering what happened in Hull:

Don’t believe even for one second this isn’t what they want.

@GossiTheDog Unfortunatley, feeling ashamed for your actions requires self-reflection which this specific person seems to not be able to perform.
@GossiTheDog Waiting for the arrest warrants to be issued 🤔
@GossiTheDog these fascists really want to see the world burn and deliberately pour fuel into the fire.
@GossiTheDog I really wish any of them felt something like shame
@GossiTheDog Its gonna be delicious watching them suffer the full force of Patel & Braverman’s new penalties for rioting.
