Today in Labor History August 2, 1918: Canada’s first General Strike occurred in Vancouver as a one-day protest over the assassination of WWI resister and labor activist Ginger Goodwin. Canadian workers had been calling for a General Strike for months because of their outrage over conscription, censorship of socialist media, inflation and low wages. They were also inspired by Bolshevik Revolution. There was considerable right-wing backlash against the workers, particularly by soldiers, who attacked the Labor Temple.
