SearingTruth"Human life is precious, and at this time women are the only ones who can give birth to it. As such nature has presented them simultaneously with a great burden and a great gift. So ultimately it is up to the woman to decide if she accepts that burden, and will provide us with that gift.
At the same time, it's everyone's duty to protect life to as great a degree as possible. And abortion forwards a fundamental question - When does a group of cells become life? I believe it to be when the human brain begins to form, as that is what defines us as human. And that occurs around 42 days after conception.
So I propose that until that time abortions be performed with no penalties and no benefits. But after that time, if a woman wishes it, society should offer to provide her and the unborn with all the support they require. This would include housing, food, medical care, education, and a stipend to ensure an enjoyable quality of life. And after the child is born an option to surrender it for adoption, or receive continued benefits to assure she may raise it without undo hardship.
Sadly though, if the woman rejects this offer she should still be given the choice of abortion until the child is viable outside of the womb. This is not a choice that leaves me morally satisfied, but I share neither the burden nor the gift, so my morality is not the arbiter.
And for those who would object because of cost, they must ponder the question of whether they really value life. And ask themselves how much they are willing to pay for a singularly priceless gift."
