You'd think it would be a relatively unsophisticated sound: the instrument normally has under 10 strings after all. A master player, however, can pull out all sorts of extras by finding the harmonics. I am absolutely in awe of Nikos Xanthoulis. Another lyre player I find very interesting is Giorgio Sancristoforo. I think he's probably better known for his experiments with modern composition and electronic music. Then he goes acoustic and starts playing around with the reverb and harmonics on recreations of the ancient kithara.
