A few of things about the current emergency (as of June 24, 2024) in #Jasper, #Alberta:

Note: I am in #Edmonton, ~5 hours west, 'watching' at a distance.

1. On the surface, the Jasper #evacuation could seem similar to that of #FortMcMurray #ymm eight years ago (2016). Some similarities include limited highway options for egress and the entire population needing to leave at the same time.

2. In the 2016 FortMcMurray evacuation, #Edmonton was one of the sites for evacuees to find shelter, including overnight sleeping, food and water, etc. Edmonton has again served in this way for many northern #Alberta residents in subsequent #wildfire #emergencies

3. For the most part, wildfire has made access to Edmonton impossible for the 2024 Jasper evacuees, with them being directed westward to #Valemont, #BC.

4. At Valemont #BC, a reception centre supplied shelter to those it could. However, the entire population of a major #NationalPark town and all its visitors is relatively huge.

5. Many evacuees were then directed back to #Alberta to the cities of #GrandPrairie #yqu and #Calgary #yyc. These are long journeys following mountain highways.

6. Many other small communites along the way have done what they could, their communities opening what facilities and sharing what supplies they could.

7. Many #Jasper #evacuees were also sent further into #BC to the city of #Kamloops #yka. However, due to BC having many of its own #wildfires, there is no room to absorb/support these folks. They are now being redicted to #Calgary #yyc, another ~7 hrs drive west.

8. According to folks local to #Jasper #AB and #Kamloops #yka #BC (via social media) and news, there is no additional capacity in Kamloops, due to #wildfires and various evacuations in BC communities.

Jasper evacuees are being told to head to #Calgary #yyc, another ~7 hours drive among admittedly gorgeous scenery but yet more mountainous highways when they may have had NO SLEEP since Monday night.

9. This is where differences from the 2016 #FortMcMurray #ymm #EvacuationOrder are becoming more evident: #Jasper #AB, unlike Fort Mac, is chock-full of tourists. Many of whom do not speak English or do not know it well.

In all the chaos and confusion of fleeing #wildfires, imagine having to do so when you can't clearly understand directions, or explanations, or other information critical to your safety. 😱

10. International tourists might also have no familiarity with the local or larger geography of not only #Jasper #AB, but also #BC.

Will they have access to reliable, functional maps during the #emergency? Will their mapping software work if they hit an area with low or damaged cellphone infrastructure?

11. Do tourists know about or have access to apps such as the AEA, Alberta Emergency Alert App?

After the AEA stopped pushing updates about the #Jasper #AB #EvacuationOrder, people were directed to Jasper's #Facebook page.

I'm Albertan and have not used FB. Is it reasonable that during an emergency, evacuees need to make accounts and navigate unfamiliar, general-purpose apps just to find out how to stay alive?

12. The tourism aspect of the 2024 #Jasper #AB #EvacuationOrder brings to light many issues around #wildfire safety and survival I had not previously considered during the 2016 #FortMcMurray #ymm wildfire.

I'm just a regular person, not an emergency planner. I expect most folks enjoying a holiday--whether local or from distant lands--are likewise not especially knowledgeable about navigating a large-scale emergency.

Are those who are responsible for #EmergencyPlanning and #EvacuationOrders taking these issues into consideration? Do offline (print) materials exist? Multi-lingual translation of emergency information?

And this is not even to mention another group of folks that might be local or visiting: #ActuallyDisabled people. Are basic #accessibility features such as ramps available in evacuation centres? Emergency Rx or medical equipment support?

10/x

#ABfire
#BCfire

I ask that last bit because despite being #ActuallyDisabled most if my life, it is only in recent years that I've learned that when children who use #wheelchairs are in a #FireDrill or actual fire, they often do NOT get to #evacuate with their peers, especially if the school is multi-floor.

Instead the must wait--alone and cut off from any support--for firefighters to rescue them.

Same for adults in workplaces, actually.

Monstrous. 😑

Given the unfolding experiences of the #Jasper #AB #wildfire #evacuees--where they are just the most recent of many displaced people seeking urgent help and resources are insufficient--I strongly suspect we need to massively expand #EmergencyPlanning and #EmergencyResources for the present and 'new normal' of the foreseeable future.

We have a LOT to do.

@likelyjanlukas We really do! I sure hope the UCP stops cutting the firefighting budget and puts money towards the emergency response systems.

@Bel_tamtu

Cynical me suspects that cabinet members would have to be fΓͺted with 'honourary fire captainships' and get to drive the engines around before they'd lift a finger even to just reinstate what was cut.

😑

@likelyjanlukas In at least some buildings (workplaces) they have stryker evacuation chairs (I know because one is stored in its box very visibly near the major stairwell in a building I'm in regularly). I don't know if there is any requirement that people are trained in how to help someone who normally uses a wheelchair use one however. Nor do I know if this is some sort of requirement statewide or a one off on that one floor of a building at UCI. So the technology exists...

@SRLevine

To my knowledge I have never seen one of these in my life: the closest would be those nasty transfer chairs they use on airlines.

However, I am NOT a wheelchair user to it is possible that such devices aren't on my radar (still, I would've guessed they'd be visible, like the one you describe and I guarantee I've not seen anything like that at my uni in AB or others I've visited for conferences).

Looks like a great idea! πŸ™‚

@likelyjanlukas Yeah I learned about this one recently. :O Standard operating procedure with wheelchair users in apartment buildings in the USA (and I'm presuming Canada) is "don't use the elevators" and for wheelchair users to wait for firefighters to rescue them. :O It's pretty horrifying. I've heard some stories about people co-ordinating to get a wheelchair user safely out but then what about their chair??? It's such a terrible situation. I think they should be able to use the elevators, personally, it's a special case.

@Bel_tamtu

Having seen footage of how some elevators operate during fire (eg: auto-opening and not able to re-close doors on raging lobby fire), not to mention that getting stuck in an elevator is miserable even when a building is NOT on fire, I'd personally not like to risk it. 😱

But again, I'm not a #wheelchair user myself and I don't know what folks who rely on these would consider best/safest in an emergency.

@likelyjanlukas OH AND ALSO unrelated to the wheelchairs but there's an out of control wildfire burning not far West from Calgary currently. I just learned. I sure hope all those redirected people make it here okay but like, I also hope we don't have to evacuate or anything. :/

@Bel_tamtu

Thanks for letting me know! 😒 I'm so far behind on current wildfires province-wide (~170 as of yesterday afternoon IIRC).

Let's hope the evacuees and other travellers on the #TransCanada through eastern #Alberta are able to travel safely today.
