Today, the entire reserve, which is home to some 5000 people, is under an evacuation order. Everyone must leave by 10 pm. I first met with Chief Sewepagaham and his leadership team last September, after last year’s fire, to talk about the extraordinary challenges Fox Lake was facing in rebuilding. We’ve stayed in touch ever since. I can’t even imagine what it feels like for the Little Red River Cree Nation to be going through this all again, when they were still struggling to recover from the 2023 disaster.
