I saw someone refer to a "DEI Engineer" as the cause of the CrowdStrike outage. Lots of things wrong with that. I'll summarize:

* The assertion's totally made up.
* When catastrophic failures happen in complex systems, there are almost always multiple causes.
* Human error means a system wasn't robust enough to support the humans who work with it.

But most importantly: if you use "DEI engineer" as a pejorative, *fuck you*. Racism is poison to systemic quality much moreso than technical risks.

If you are someone underrepresented in tech and you had to see that shit, I'm so sorry. We have such a long way to go. I see you and your contributions. Do your best to remember that while some people will try to reduce you to the small size of their worldview, you contain multitudes and you are awesome.
@sjkilleen
I'm no expert but it seems like dei doesn't actually require engineering
@sjkilleen On a WaPo story about the incident I saw a comment blaming it on DEI. And, wow, I didn't realize that DEI has been smurfed like "woke" or "pronouns" to where just anything I don't like is DEI. But also, I had seen this story here and it seems like this is very specifically an example of mediocre white guys failing upward. https://www.newsbytesapp.com/news/science/defective-mcafee-once-caused-worldwide-meltdown-of-windows-xp-pcs/story
McAfee-caused PC meltdown and Microsoft-CrowdStrike outage have a common connection

@skweetis Yuup. There's this M.O. amongst terrible people where they take a thing that moves the world forward and misapply it and turn it into a dog whistle amongst themselves for whatever quiet thing they're too chickenshit to say out loud, so they can wink and nod and feel like they belong. And they rob that thing of any joy in order to stop its momentum.

It's so pathetic. Like saying "I can be cool too! We hate the same things! Accept me!" Just the weakest way to go through life.

@skweetis realizing as I say this that I need to celebrate things like DEI more loudly and publicly, not just in response to those people, but ignoring them entirely. I need to put more celebration of progress into the world. Because if I'm not, then the airwaves are more open for garbage.

Gonna noodle on that.

@sjkilleen it’s not as if white men have never been responsible for massive fuck-ups…
