I just minutes ago finished Calvin Trillin's book, The Lede. He has a chapter on them!
I lived in the Houston area when Ann Richards was the Governor of Texas. Politics there have always been like a sport, but unlike now, it wasn't Hunger Games.

It's insights and anecdotes from Trillin's very long career as a reporter and columnist: New Yorker, Time, Texas Monthly, New York Times, many more. Recommended.
I'm kind of a media hound (BA/Journalism,) so I loved it. Got it as ebook from my library through Libby.
