What about the problem of #Windows11 requirements (#TPM20) that will force #universities, schools & everyone to purchase new IT by 2025?

At first glance, this looks like a huge planned obsolescence #eWaste project in the guise of #ItSecurity.

Canalys warnt: Windows 10 Supportende schickt mindestens 250 Millionen PCs in den Elektroschrott

[English]Im Oktober 2025 läuft der reguläre Support für Windows 10 aus. Microsoft will zwar eine bezahlte Supportverlängerung (ESU) anbieten. Canalys...

It's only eWaste if you stick to windows. But there is much more on this planet than Windows. A lot of companies seeing this, are thinking about how they can get rid of windows. With all the cloud services, it's not even a big problem. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@frebelt @gerrymcgovern @wim_v12e Yes, this is bad news, but I agree with @lindworm

Companies can even use this to move to Linux OS. Nowadays the distros are so much better and user friendly, so it might not even be that hard...

Who knows...

@frebelt

TPM 2.0 was released in 2014. Desktops have typically 4 to 6 year replacement cycles, so I think by 2025 most machines should have TPM 2.0

Of course we need longer replacement cycles, ideally 20 years but I'd settle for 10; but I don't think the TPM requirement will mean a huge increase in obsolescence. The Copilot requirement is much worse (NPU with 40 TOPS)

@frebelt
It's not just TPM 2: other requirements are so steep. My grandmother got her (fairly high-spec) computer in 2018 and yet will have to buy a new one for Windows 11! If she's still using it as much in late 2025, I'll work out something with Linux (maybe kubuntu or Zorin?), and try to make it easier to use...

My desktop PC is Win 10 only and I expect to be able to go on using it for as long as I need to.
