haven’t seen this for a while, cos i have little tolerance for dysfunctional families (don’t even have anything to do with my own)
BUT OMG “enjoyed” it this time. not entertaining, but so well made, and with an all star cast.
one link below for trailer, and another for a page with info about osage county (i could not stomach more than 20 mins of killers of the flower moon, but this page filled in the story for me.)
in an early scene of movie, driving through oklahoma plains (brown grass like australia in february) - one character heading home to osage says in a disgusted tone something like “pfft - we fucked the Indians for *this*?!”)
perhaps she meant dry paddocks (destroyed by western style monoculture) but after sitting through 2 hours of dysfunction i guess it might also be the message of the whole piece - “we destroyed the lives that were previously here so we would be free to behave like *this*?!”
(could be any of a 100 places in australia, honestly)
not entertaining or uplifting, but honest. i didn’t care about the characters that were arseholes, and the others were strong enough to leave, so i found it sort of satisfying rather than threatening.
cos yes, virginia, some parents really are incredibly mean spirited like this.
