#WhatFourGames that you've played in 2024 would you consider to be your favourites so far?

Think of it as a half-way GOTY list.

Ideally we'll use images but I understand that's not practical. They don't have to be 2024 releases. I'll kick us off...

Please #Boost for exposure. I'd love this to become a sort of weekly #MstdnGames feature, but we can't do that without your help.

And thanks.

@danielholt "Another Crab's Treasure".
It's like the halfway point between Dark Souls and Psychonauts and it absolutely works. As a lover of both 3D mascot platforms and everything Fromsoft, I feel like the game was made for me. Currently standing tall as my game of the year contender.

@roy_rock_on I bounced off of that one hard.

Really enjoyed the boss fights but I found the rest of the game to be a bit subpar. Not a criticism of the game as such, just that if I'm going to play those games and commit that time I need it to be absolutely amazing.

@danielholt To each their own I suppose. I'll grant some confusing level design and more limited character progression than others in the genre.
I just think the shell system is a brilliant bit of game design. Forces you to change up you play-style and rewards defensive play. Very much feeds into the crab fantasy.

Anyway, Nine Sols is at the top of my to play list. Looks incredible.

Animal Well
Prince of Persia the lost Crown

@el_gran_edu

I went into Animal Well very excited and I lasted an hour before I decided it wasn't for me.

Oh well I guess.

@danielholt For me, I've played a lot of metroidvanias and it was refreshing to find one without combat, with multi-purpose items that are not spoon-fed but rather you're supposed to discover by yourself, with multi-layered secrets and some sense of wonder when discovering stuff. Many of the secrets are too hard for me, but it's super interesting to read about how the community solved it all. Kind of the same with Fez.

Persona 3 Reload
Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance
Ghostwire: Tokyo
SPYxANYA Operation Memories
@COMPU73E You win.....I've got no idea why SPYxANYA is.
@danielholt it's based on the SPYxFAMILY manga/anime, which I am a big fan of
@COMPU73E You played Ghostwire Tokyo? I got that for free on Epic Games Store, haven’t tried it yet.
@oldthink34 yeah I picked it up from Amazon super cheap, it's really good! kinda like Dishonored meets SMT, I liked it a lot

@danielholt This was way harder than I expected it to be, and that's with the fact that I keep really excellent track of what I've played.

I'm not including Against the Storm, because I would have called that one of my favorites of 2023, so even though I played it this year as well, I thought I'd give someone else a chance.

#Palworld #IslandsOfInsight #Crashlands #Reus2

So: Palworld, Islands of Insight, Crashlands, and Reus 2.

@Krikket When did Reus 2 come out? I played the OG game like....ten years ago and had no idea we got a sequel.
@danielholt The very end of May! I have way over 100 hours (and several resets) in the original, so that was a day one grab for me. I haven't spent nearly as much time with it as I would like, but it's good, even though it's also pretty damn different.
@Krikket Not a direct sequel or have they just added a load of new features?

@danielholt They added 2 new gods, and changed it so you can only take 3 at a time. They got rid of needing to manage how fast towns develop because they won't go to war with each other (or you!), and the planets feel smaller, I have not managed to get more than I think 4 towns going at once.

So it's a direct sequel in that the game play loop is very similar, but all the individual items and projects and things are different.

@Krikket I wonder how it runs on Deck....

I'm crying out for something like that, that I can play on the Deck.

@danielholt I have only played on my desktop so far, but I can totally test that out for you!
@danielholt (also, I forgot to mention the biggest change - the sequel is TURN based instead of TIME based, which I didn't think I'd like but I actually think is great after playing)

@danielholt I kind of dropped the ball on this, but I am pleased to report that Reus 2 works pretty good on the Steam Deck, with the biggest drawback being in the text size, but I found it manageable.

(it's also 20% off until August 1st.)

@PaseoBaggage

Thanks for using the hashtag 👍👍👍

@danielholt I've recently been playing a string of quiet games where I've gotten to raise bees, craft magical reagents, farm a utopian post-apocalypse, and dismantle the police to preserve the wilds of Moominland. #WhatFourGames
gush.taks.garden

@Tak Tunic is great. Probably one of the games I look back on most fondly. I'll never play it again, but everything about is is just nice.

I do wish they'd release that instruction manual as a real world thing though.

@Tak @danielholt Same and same. I've been working through Tunic and it is amazing.
