This is a thread of the most ridiculously brilliant (or brilliantly ridiculous) #Free_and_Open_Source projects I encounter, in a semi-chronological order.
Feel free to submit contributions to this thread!

#1. Activate Linux: a port of the "activate windows" watermark to linux.

Not really ridiculous but is a good #FOSS project:

#4. DidYouMean - a CLI simple and easy spellchecker.
On the one hand I am a firm believer in disabling autocorrect and not caring about spelling, on the other hand, I can't deny the fact this is genuinely useful.

7. PySkyWiFi - get free internet on planes by squeezing data through edits to your skymiles account.
absolutely genius, even greater than BookmarkFS in my opinion.

also, the article includes this incredible quote:
"The PySkyWiFi transport layer is somewhat similar to the TCP protocol that powers much of the internet, if you squint very hard and don’t know much about TCP."
what more can you ask for.

PySkyWiFi: completely free, unbelievably stupid wi-fi on long-haul flights | Robert Heaton

The plane reached 10,000ft. I took out my laptop, planning to peruse the internet and maybe do a little work if I got really desperate.

@Yuvalne Ok, so I didn't read all of the details (I'm not a programmer) but this comment stood out: "This meant that on my next flight I could technically have full access to the internet, via my airmiles account. Depending on network conditions on the plane I might be able to hit speeds of several bytes per second."
