I've been thinking about the (US) cliche that, "you can't do internet over #hamRadio because of the advertising." Who says so? Not #part97 unless I missed something.

I'm not getting paid for the #advertising, so I have no #pecuniary interest. Maybe you could argue it's #thirdPartyTraffic, which might mean no retransmission outside the country.

A proxy with a null cipher to the full #internet seems legal as far as I can tell. Where am I wrong?

#AmateurRadio

@kf7ccc Hmm... Well. You would definitely need something in place to make sure the vast majority of the Internet, such as Facebook, porn, etc. can't be retransmitted. Also, no matter what, Part 97 definitely and clearly says that you're responsible for whatever happens as the station's control operator.

@kf7ccc Related, my local hams usually provide support for an annual community charity auction.

At one point they were asked to relay a message tangentially related to money, I think requesting a runner to pick up deposits from one of the cashiers or something, and declined on the grounds of "no pecuniary interest".

Personally, I would consider that to be perfectly fine, on the grounds that none of the communicating parties are profiting from the message in any way. They're all unpaid volunteers, and their activity happens to involve money, but it's charitable donations neither from nor to them, not a commercial enterprise.
