If Etsy acquires, gets acquired by, or merges with eBay or Amazon or Alibaba or Temu in the next six months, I called it yesterday, based on my theory that when a platform rolls out new pornocalypse policies, it usually indicates a financial inflection point like a merger or acquisition.

Here's yesterday's ErosBlog post on the upcoming Etsy pornocalypse:

Pornocalypse Comes For Etsy - ErosBlog: The Sex Blog

I have argued that the pornocalypse began with Meg Whitman's eBay, back in the last century: Then Meg Whitman happened. Itโ€™s too many years ago now for me... Tagged: sex blogging,

I think it's darkly hilarious that, after Tumblr spent years being laughed at for banning "female-presenting nipples", Etsy proves that it learned nothing at all from that debacle and included "female nipples" in the list of things banned under its new #pornocalypse rules.

@ErosBlog I think that Tumblr's tumble was something that helped eventually fuel Mastodon/The Fediverse as people were looking for a place they could discuss things without fear of an eventual crackdown.

I wonder if we will see a Federated, decentralized, open Etsy-clone pop up after this?

I've been wanting something like that to end up being an open alternative to a place like Amazon if it got big enough, and a lot of the internet innovation is driven by the porn industry. (I am looking at the video serving and conferencing, mostly.)

@LexPendragon @ErosBlog
I think many Tumblr refugees were looking for another place to post adult content including full on porn. Adult content is allowed on most Fediverse instances but I get the feeling it's not very well received. Even simple non-sexual nudity.
@ErosBlog I did, at one point go to Tumblr, but who goes to Etsy for porn? I would be surprised it I want to Etsy for a knitted Kitty and found a pussy with a braded bush. .
@Wondering_Hannigan @ErosBlog it's more custom sex toys than actual porn. Predictably platforms don't see a difference.

Target can sell cheap dildos and vibrators next to sunscreen but heaven forbid that happens on the internet.
@amy @ErosBlog @Wondering_Hannigan
Etsy also has a lot of sellers for custom leather gear: cuffs, collars, harnesses etc

@amy @Wondering_Hannigan @ErosBlog And ridiculously, I can order the same in the Target app (via the internet!), and some poor employee (who knows damn well what's in the bag) has to bring it out to my car.

But clearly that's not a problem, either (except the low-key awkwardness for the employee).

@Wondering_Hannigan @ErosBlog Some indie published romance authors sell their books via Etsy. Sadly, a lot of people and corporations think "romance=porn".
@ErosBlog They wouldn't have because Tumblr is a social network and Etsy isn't. It doesn't stand to reason to them that the former could ever apply to the latter.
@drwho I would argue that every site with multiple users who interact is a network and every large network is a social network, whether it wants to be or not. But of course you're talking about their conception of themselves, not the reality of what they built at least half by accident.

@ErosBlog Yes, exactly.

That's the mistake a lot of people make: We talk about things from the outside, but they only act based upon what they on the inside think.

@ErosBlog ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ’ฐ:"Hey baby, I like that property and/or service you've got there! I might just have a tidy acquisition sum to slide into your account, too, if you ditch all those nasty naughty fringe users...๐Ÿ‘€"

๐Ÿค‘: "yes, daddy!"

@ErosBlog @egypt Why does it seem like capitalism ruins everything?
@andrewdwilliams @egypt The funny part is that it even ruins capitalism. ๐Ÿ˜€
@ErosBlog @Mollysdailykiss Etsy has banned selling things I can buy on the shelf of my local RiteAid. Brilliant.
@ErosBlog A small aside, but it appears Korea lifted the block on your site and I can see it now xD thought I'd give you a heads up.
@ljwrites Nice! I never did figure out why I got blocked there, although one assumes it's the usual reasons.
@ErosBlog Let's just hope it isn't because they consider you all tame and proper now!
@ErosBlog Considering the date is the same as Patreon's deadline for age verification, my guess would be that it is some deadline given by Mastercard this time.
@ErosBlog :( Just last year I was able to sell nsfw art prints. I think I recieved a ban before the policies changed for no reason. It's terrible seeing the human body censored worse than it has been compared to medieval times....At least they allowed the David and potrayals of Venus....

@ErosBlog

I've just sent them a message telling them that I'm not going to buy from them anymore due to their idiotic stance.
