I cancelled my NYT subscription. They can't hear their readers. It's time for a new journalism, and we're going to have to do it without them. I haven't cancelled my Washington Post subscription yet, but I'm pretty sure that's coming up soon enough.
@davew I did the same a few months ago. I then signed up for the WaPo. But, it has a somewhat blind spot to the coming fascism too.
@krakalak @davew
We are in a media war. The public will lose.

@davew I keep meaning to sign up for @404mediaco - wish there was a similar publication for not-tech.

Maybe there is, that I don't yet know about...

@davew I’m still e-subscribed to larger Canadian papers (I’m in Toronto) but I’m also trying to focus on smaller niche outlets as much as I can, to try to support a true-journalism pipeline. I also donate to TV Ontario (sort of a provincial PBS) as they are still quite reasonable.

@davew Philadelphia Inquirer intro! Six months for one dollar!! Editorial calls for Donald Trump to drop out of the race
!!!🍸🍸🍸😹

“In Philadelphia, everyone reads the inquirer”

@martinicat @davew. Thank you for this information. I will sign up immediately. Huge fan of Will Bunch!
@davew Where I live we have two startup news/journalism outfits that are small 2-4 person operations. Both funded by crowdfunding and the larger one also by advertising. The focus locally at the city and provincial levels.

@davew I started with NYT, then shortly after cancelled my WaPo sub. It was when they both started heavily down the both-sidism path that it was too much for me.

I’ve found some refuge in Mother Jones, Daily Beast, and Raw Story, but I would love to see a curated list somewhere of alternatives to billionaire backed mainstream media. Not sure how that’s accomplished in the fediverse, but it would be a great resource.

@davew I cancelled Wash Post last night, and am now thinking about where to donate the money saved - probably political candidates.
@davew. I canceled #WaPo a few months ago (#NYT a long time ago). I think it was a #Thiessen opinion piece that was the last straw but it was a hard decision. Some of their reporting had been excellent, especially the articles on conditions in #assistedliving residences and #nursinghomes.
@davew I cancelled mine post debate. I had subscribed for years but, FU #WashingtonPost
@davew
They won't change until they feel it.

@davew I don't think they have readers any longer. It's just a propaganda rag now.

Nobody can seriously be getting their news from this rag.

@davew Serious question, where do you intend to move your dollars?
@davew hear the readers? There wasn't much care when they were spinning it for your causes..lol..you aren't looking for the right bubble journalists..your looking for your own talk show..
@davew Go to subscribe to @404mediaco if you have the economic possibility
@davew ProPublica gets my money every month. They know what journalism is.
@davew I also like Media Matters. They focus on investigating media itself. A worthy cause that deserves attention.
@davew There's a reason why I call it the Bezos Post...

@davew

The Gray Lady always did like platforming anti-democracy movements on behalf of the moneyed.

@davew Thank you for starting this necessary conversation. As a #DC resident, I cancelled #wapo several weeks ago because of its failure to hold local government accountable and its bothsidesing on the election. I am now cancelling my #nyt subscription of 3+ decades. My news sources now: The #guardian @propublica, #BBC Mundo, and several excellent newsletters (Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance and Judd Legum) and now, thanks to this thread, #PhillyInquirer
@davew I don't subscribe to either, but I'm sadden that we're seeing such a blatant scramble for clicks in our democracy's final hours. Trump being a fascist isn't news, so they keep the ad money flowing by harping on Biden's (legitimate) faults.

@davew I only know about the LA library but there may be similar arrangements in other cities’ libraries as well.
If you can show you are a resident of California then you can apply for a LA Library card. With an LA library card you can access many newspapers for free, including NYT and WaPo (though funny enough, not the LA Times)

https://www.lapl.org/newspapers

Your library card gives you digital access to New York Times at the library, at home, and on the go.

@davew
Congratulations for taking the leap. I cancelled both WAPO and NYT.
@davew sane journalism going forward should embed every news story about Trump in a set of links to all known relevant facts and fair summaries of him, of all his awfulness. its the flakey "swing" voters and "low info" voters who have been fucking US democracy over and may be our undoing
@davew same, this week. Eff this
@davew I quit cable because of my disgust with cable news. I use streaming with a firestick that gets me my morning local news. I don't miss being manipulated for their ratings. I'm a life long Dem and will use my vote to secure democracy for my grandchildren. I've watched Trump for decades and I wouldn't trust him with a pet rat.
@luv_wins @davew Trump has so many pet rats too
@davew I came to a similar conclusion. I replaced it with a subscription to the Philly Inquirer, which called for P01135809 to drop out of the race for the good of the country.
@davew cancelled as well. decided to sub to #guardian instead.
@davew after the Schwartz scandal the NYT lost all credibility
@davew I already give Bezos too much money so I never had WP but I did cancel my NYT sub. I was explicit in my offboard survey that it was because of the relentless Biden hit pieces. I'm still doing wordle though, so I'm a pretty shit ally.
