#TheLimitsToGrowth–Now Available to Read Online!

Published: June 6th, 2013
By Sarah Parkinson

"The complete text of the original #LimitsToGrowth study is now accessible for free online, thanks to a partnership between the Dartmouth College Library, #DennisMeadows, and the #SustainabilityInstitute.

"The Limits to Growth, originally published in 1972, was a groundbreaking study that modeled the dynamics of our human presence on the planet. The team behind it, led by Dennis Meadows, found that continuing with a '#BusinessAsUsual#growth model would likely lead to #environmental and #economic collapse within a century. At the time, their discoveries sparked huge controversy among scientists, scholars, and the general public. In the decades since, those discoveries have been supported by patterns of growth, environmental health, and resource use.

"Today, forty years after its release, The Limits to Growth remains an important resource for anyone hoping to understand more about the complex system that is our planet. We are honored and excited to make it freely available online. Each page of the publication has been carefully scanned and optimized for digital viewing, and all the original figures are included. The digital work has been assigned a Creative Commons BY-NC license, so we encourage you to download it and pass it along to your friends!"

@DoomsdaysCW @breadandcircuses Great of them to make this resource freely available. I remember reading “The Limits to Growth” back in 1974 when in college and taking a population ecology course. I look forward to rereading it now.

@DoomsdaysCW Thank you for this. Will share among my networks. 🌏

Thanks, agreed.

First book to give me a deep dive into American imperialism, the harm we cause other countries thru exploitation and why some ppl despise us.

@504DR @DoomsdaysCW @breadandcircuses My takeaway (~30) years after reading remains: An energy interest identifies something it wants within your political boundaries. At first, country heads are wined, dined, bribed and coerced to allow access. Failing that, a coup attempt, and failing that, a military assault.

Did I miss anything?

@MHowell @DoomsdaysCW @breadandcircuses

You got most of it.

What really sticks in my mind also, was the role that the World Bank and IMF played in facilitating it all.

The forever-debt that those exploited countries were burdened with.
And how they were unable to provide adequately for their own ppl bc of that debt.

Is the 'unknown unknown' that everyone should worry about the most. Bis.org OTC swaps are OFF THE BOOKS.

@cdnpup @MHowell @DoomsdaysCW @breadandcircuses

Derivatives should have been outlawed the moment some numbnut thought them up.
🤬

Not surprised tho, the stock market is an unregulated wild west with no sheriffs allowed.

Thanks for bringing this book to my attention. I remember the title from many years ago when I was deep into the history of the Irish revolution and civil war but had forgotten about it since then. Sounds very good.
@bibliothecarivs @DoomsdaysCW @breadandcircuses
It is. In part an impressionistic stream-of-consciousness account of a period of extreme activity in a young person's life, it depicts his transformation from a sheltered first-year medical student to peripatetic organiser and trainer, to hardened guerilla, and eventually to de facto warlord of much of the South-west, commanding over 7000 fighters. It's an extraordinarily powerful read, perhaps in part because the notes for it were written.../

.../ while O'Malley was in hospital awaiting execution, badly wounded following his capture by Free State forces.

Word of warning- the book can leave a reader with an irresistible urge to action. This was a positive influence in my life but I have it on good authority that the book has been a key step on the pathway for a good number of outstanding young people to throw away their lives on a compromised organisation over the years.

@DoomsdaysCW

I so need to get back to the books section of TidySearch ...
