You are cordially invited to my trolley problem...
Flip the switch midway for a happy ending!! 🎉
@catsalad This is exactly the kind of problem solving we need! I was looking for an example of something that represented a way out of black-and-white thinking and catastrophizing.
@catsalad Great! I thought the trolley problem had only two solutions. From now on I'll opt for the third!

@Datterich Unfortunately, this solution only works for trolleys with freely rotating bogies. Traditional trolleys often use simple two-axle chassis. Even more these simple two-axle designs seem to be popular again with modern ultra long trams like the Bombardier Flexity.

@catsalad

@taschenorakel @catsalad

So, you're saying: "It depends"?
That's also a law students' answer to the trolley problem. ;-)

@Datterich Rather an engineer's answer... But actually, it's quite interesting how this third answer reveals that there is a whole universe of other answers.

@catsalad

@taschenorakel
In my StarTrek years, I would have come up with multiple universes of possible answers. :-D

@catsalad

@taschenorakel @Datterich @catsalad

So those would almost certainly derail -- flipping the trolly, inflicting serious injuries and likely deaths among the passengers.

@catsalad I like Miffy so much more now than when I had to read the books to my son!
@catsalad
They tried this in East Palestine, Ohio and look how that turned out.

@catsalad My absolute favorite answer to the trolley problem!!!!

@catsalad

Of course, with a real life trolley, the momentum of the trolley would cause it to roll over off the tracks, smashing into all of the victims.

@isaackuo @catsalad

With a real life trolley, I'd go after the person who tied all those people to the tracks.

@catsalad does it say something about me that I was surprised/disappointed this solution saves both sets of people, rather than killing both?
