@nixCraft I think it's a kind of text editor, a little more evolved maybe.

@nixCraft Linus' original project was to make a full, libre, Unix-like operating system. He wrote the kernel himself, but didn't feel the need to reïnvent the wheel when the GNU project had already done so much.

He called his project #Freax, because Linux was too egotistical. Ari Lemmke unilaterally renamed it because he thought Freax was a bad name. I suspect Stallman would approve of the name Freax, and not insist on GNU/Freax.

@nixCraft ...a typo. The first name is spelled Linus.
@Datterich @nixCraft the last name is spelled Tech Tips
@nixCraft I know that it is just a kernel, but when talking about it I treat it like an operating system.
@nixCraft I think you have to call it systemd/Linux nowadays.
@nixCraft It may depend on who you're answering this to. For the people related to software in any form (except using it), it's a kernel. For others, a group of OSes makes more sense.

@nixCraft

#Linux
Of course Linux is a kernel, you silly.

Even stones know that the OS is named SystemD.

@nixCraft This is much like the tomato 'debate':

A normal person: "A tomato is a vegetable"
The pedant, interjecting: "well, actually..."

@nixCraft "Think it is" - I'm a linguistic descriptivist, so I described the word's *use*, and that's primarily referring the operating system rather than the kernel in my everyday speech, even among other developers.
@nixCraft both, but primarily a kernel.
@nixCraft Given that the Kernel is monolithic and iirc contains interpreters for several virtual machines, does it even need the userspace? /j
@nixCraft Technically, it's a kernel. In practice, no one, except a small group of nerds, gives a crap.
@shanesemler @nixCraft 73% of nerds, according to the poll
@nixCraft Both, depending on what the person saying "Linux" means (and how techliterate they are)
@nixCraft It's definitely a kernel, hah. I think that what Linux is referred to in consumer space is a philosophical way of building a Linux-based OS with the desktop being the hub for all sorts of tasks, and imo it doesn't mandate GNU tools.
@nixCraft I want to choose both 😠
