In the @emf opening ceremony I spoke about how a total lack of government support for the arts has made running UK festivals extremely risky.

When I said that three weeks ago, 42 festivals had cancelled or gone bankrupt THIS YEAR.

It is now over 50.

Fields of dreams: how do we save the UK festival sector?

Amidst the insurmountable rise in the price of production, and the ongoing cost of living crisis, how are organisers feeling about the crisis in UK festivals? And what solutions are there?

@emf Remember what this government did to UK culture.

EMF will survive, but only because we have volunteers and attendees who will make huge sacrifices.

Others are not so lucky. Every single shuttered festival, venue, and club was important to a community. We may not get them back.

@jonty @emf Reminded of that meme about George Osborne at a hospital being confused about how it creates profit. "The arts" are the same - if it's not turning money into more money, and doing it quickly, what's the purpose? It's incredible to see an entire generation raised to assume they'll be the 'ruling elite' and not even understand concepts like 'soft power'.
@jonty @emf 5 years ago people were complaining there were too many. I have very little to say about that but it was certainly diluting the supply of infrastructure leading to a not great experience for everyone involved.
@jonty @emf I'm not convinced that we can blame the loss of other venues completely on the Tories but I'd be quite happy to just for the sake of statistics.
@mw1cgg @jonty @emf If you blamed everything on the Tories, you'd still be right half the time.

@tryst @mw1cgg @jonty @emf

I think it's safe to blame the Tories for considerably more than half

@jonty @emf Interesting article:

"Secret Garden Party, an event sheโ€™s worked with extensively, wants to facilitate this, inviting smaller events to use its site following extensive infrastructure investment."

Not a bad idea, it takes a lot of effort to get the infrastructure ready and clear down at the end.

I went to Hospitality on the Beach (https://www.hospitalityonthebeach.com/) a few years ago in Albania.
The week after Hospitality was a techno festival, and then a week after that was a deep house festival on the same site, which kinda makes sense.

However, this was on a sandy coast in very dry conditions - not sure that would always work, most of the UK festivals seem to be in fields and the ground would need time to recover after the usual weather we get at festivals here ๐Ÿ˜ž

@jonty @emf @mattgrayyes sadly not just a UK problem. So many festivals going under here in Australia for the same reason
