Dabbling in #cordage
Commonly used cordyline (ti leaf) and trying out some false cardamom leaves. False cardamom is in the ginger family. I have lots of different kinds of ginger, so if this dries nicely and is strong enough for crafts or even gentle use, it will be great! #crafting #plants #fiber #feral #today #primitiveskills #weaving
I have a goal to use some of the farm's invasive grasses like guinea grass and red sugarcane to make cordage and coiled baskets. I'm not much of a weaver, other than the wild, freeform stuff, but it is enjoyable, and in the end, a thing!
I make an assumption that the ginger leaf cordage is going to be brittle and "useless" once it dries, bc nobody that I know is out here using it for that. I'm eager to see the results tho!
And if anyone wants to know how I prepared these leaves for twisting into cordage, I throw them in the freezer overnight. They become soft and pliable like a chamois cloth.
My handy dandy doohickey for all sorts of crafts. Braiding, cordage, macrame, lei making, weaving, stabilizing base. I saw this at a lei making event and came home and made one. Clearly I'm late to the smart party, for all these years I've been either tying to something and having to adjust constantly, or holding with my toes and working from there, easily adjustable as the project lengthens. This cool thing, I just wrap and wrap, in and out, and wrap some more, to take up slack on these projects as I go. You can do this at a table like a civilized person, no feet needed. 🙈 #crafts #protip #tools
